This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a new project working in partnership with South Ayrshire Secondary Schools to support young people who self-harm. This year-long project is being funded by South Ayrshire Council and aims to raise awareness of self-harm among school staff, provide one-to-one support for young people, and to provide group support for parents and cares of young people who self-harm.

As Recovery Practitioner, you will play a central role in the planning and provision of quality, recovery focused support to young people, professionals, and parents/carers who use the service. You will promote the work of the service through information and awareness raising sessions to other professionals and those who support young people who Self-Harm.

The project mainly operates Monday to Friday between the hours of 9.00 am to 5.00 pm, however some early evening work will be required to meet the demands of the service.

Driving licence and the use of a vehicle during working hours is essential.

Responsibilities

  • To establish a supportive relationship with each young person, enabling them to maximise their own resources in order to develop coping strategies to begin to replace their self-harm and improve their quality of life.
  • Develop outcome-based personal recovery plans for each young person, which promotes personal safety, self –management and social inclusion.
  • Co-ordinate delivery of recovery focused support.
  • To assist with continued service development:
  • Facilitating workshops, group activities, training and other events.
  • Attending promotional events and networking with other professionals, stakeholder and potential service users.
  • Delivering formal awareness raising sessions to service users, professionals and families/carers, and to be able to tailor the delivery as appropriate.
  • Deliver community-based well-being workshops that promote positive mental health, when required.
  • Organise, plan and facilitate awareness and/or training sessions to professionals.
  • Provide practical support and supervision to Recovery Workers, Volunteers and/or Peer Workers as required.
  • Develop effective relationships with other groups and agencies in your area and take opportunities to promote mental health awareness in the wider community.
  • Be responsible for maintaining the relevant systems of documentation.
  • Provide accurate information and reports as required.
  • Be flexible and responsive to meet the changing needs of supported people and the organisation, within the agreed criteria.
  • Work effectively with other members of the team, and liaise effectively with families, agencies, colleagues and other stakeholders.
  • Participate in training activities and meetings as required.
  • Uphold Penumbra’s Code of Practice.
  • Register with the SSSC if appropriate (Supervisor) and maintain post-registration training and learning log to meet ongoing registration requirements.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential

  • Working towards SVQ 3 or equivalent as defined by the SSSC, or commitment to achieve within 12 months of starting the role.

Desirable

  • SVQ3 or equivalent as defined by the SSSC

Essential

  • Experience of being in a supportive and enabling role
  • Experience of working with young people
  • Demonstrate understanding of mental health and recovery
  • Experience of working in the mental health and recovery field

  • Experience of a person-centred approach to recovery
  • Core IT skills and ability to input data, basic word processing, manage emails.
