The role

Working in residential care is both challenging and rewarding. Our aim is to give every young person we work with the support and guidance to reach their potential and support their aspirations for a positive future, and this is a vital part of our work. As an Assistant Residential Worker you will be working in our short break services that offers respite for young people with various learning difficulties who also can also present with a range of challenging behaviours. Although based within the short break service, we also have a residential service, supporting three young people in long term residential care with various learning difficulties who can also often display challenging behaviour. There is an expectation that staff work across both services. Both services are based in, Eastwood in the south side of Glasgow.

As an Assistant Residential Worker, you will be encouraging and supporting young people between the ages 8 and 18 in reaching their full potential and achieving new objectives by creating a stimulating environment whilst ensuring safety at all times. Therefore, you will require sound knowledge of care planning under the GIRFEC principles and national care standards along with a comprehensive understanding of safeguarding. You will assist our Residential Workers in planning and supporting young people in taking part in activities based at the service as well as out in the community such as trips to the cinema, soft play, beach, swimming, bowling and various other sports activities in order to develop their social and life skills. You will also assist and support with day-to-day activities, attend to personal care and administer medication including rescue medication for young people with epilepsy following appropriate training.

Our dayshift rota pattern is a combination of early (7.15am – 2.45pm), late (2.15pm-9.45pm) and sleepovers for which you are paid an additional allowance. The rota is produced on a 4-weekly basis, you can take the shifts that suit you and your lifestyle. There will be a mixture of early and late shifts within each week with sleepovers also distributed within the staff team. - Supporting children to achieve positive outcomes for their future.

- Supporting with medical needs or support during all working hours if needed for the young person.

- Assisting the residential workers in their planned schedule & supporting the service.

- Providing a safe environment for the residents to enjoy time with their friends.

- Assisting the children in all aspects of their care and supporting their health and wellbeing.

- Being a figure that can be trusted by the residents of the service.

You will need:

- SVQ Level 3 Children and Young People or HNC in Social care or the academic equivalent (or willingness to undertake).

- Experience of working with children/young people with disabilities and/or challenging behaviour.

- Experience of working in a residential care setting and undertaking personal care.

- Be caring, compassionate and committed to making a difference.

- Flexibility in working patterns and for the needs of the service including evenings and weekends.

- Safeguarding knowledge.

- Knowledge of GIRFEC and National Care Standards.
