The role

Working in residential care is both challenging and rewarding. Our aim is to give every young person we work with the support and guidance to reach their potential and support their aspirations for a positive future, and this is a vital part of our work. As a Residential Worker you will be working in our short break services that offers respite for young people with various learning difficulties who also can also present with a range of challenging behaviours. Although based within the short break service, we also have a residential service, supporting three young people in long term residential care with various learning difficulties who can also often display challenging behaviour. There is an expectation that staff work across both services. Both services are based in, Eastwood in the south side of Glasgow.

As a Residential Worker (day shift) you will be encouraging and supporting young people between the ages 8 and 18 in reaching their full potential and achieving new objectives by creating a stimulating environment whilst ensuring safety at all times. Therefore, you will require sound knowledge of care planning under the GIRFEC principles and national care standards along with a comprehensive understanding of safeguarding. You will be planning and supporting young people in taking part in activities based at the service as well as out in the community such as trips to the cinema, soft play, beach, swimming, bowling and various other sports activities in order to develop their social and life skills. You will also provide support with day-to-day activities, attend to personal care and administer medication including rescue medication for young people with epilepsy following appropriate training.

Our dayshift rota pattern is a combination of early (7.15am – 2.45pm), late (2.15pm-9.45pm) and sleepovers for which you are paid an additional allowance. The rota is produced on a 4-weekly basis, you will work 20 days with 8 days off during this time. There will be a mixture of early and late shifts within each week with sleepovers also distributed within the staff team. You will need:

- SVQ Level 3 Children and Young People or HNC in Social care or equivalent for Residential Workers (or a willingness to work towards this).

- Flexibility in working patterns and for the needs of the service including mornings, evenings and weekends.

- Experience of working in residential care setting and undertaking personal care as required.

- Safeguarding knowledge.

- Knowledge of GIRFEC and National Care Standards.

- Ability to work well as part of a team and in your own initiative.

- Experience of working with children/young people with disabilities and/or challenging behaviour.

- Excellent communication and relationship building skills.

- Be caring, compassionate and committed to making a difference.

- Be positive and aspirational about self and others.
