Harmeny Education Trust is a sector-leading children’s charity providing therapeutic care and education for children and young people with complex additional support needs. We currently work with up to 32 children of primary up to early secondary stage, both on a day and all-year-round residential basis.  From August 2022, we will offer continuing care and learning for young people already at Harmeny, up to the age of 18.

Harmeny is situated in a beautiful 35-acre woodland estate, which includes residential and education accommodation, community garden, orchard, wildlife habitats, children’s play areas and a mountain bike track. Harmeny is located in Balerno on the outskirts of Edinburgh, at the foot of the Pentland Hills - we are easily accessible by bus and transport links.

We are seeking a Secondary School Teacher with recent and significant experience of secondary teaching to join our outstanding Education Team on a full-time employed basis to work with children with complex additional support needs. The subject specialism required is either Maths or English.

Along with a creative approach to learning and teaching, you will demonstrate a working experience of the Curriculum for Excellence through the Broad General Education and onto the Senior Phase. Our young people will require a bespoke approach to their learning and will require their teacher to understand their needs and support a learning environment based on an interdisciplinary learning approach.

Most importantly, we are looking for a teacher who has an infectious enthusiasm for their subject with a drive and passion for supporting young people through to a positive destination. You will require to have the resilience to work with children who have social, emotional and behavioural needs in a nurturing, sensitive, caring way.

Three school closure days are allocated for additional learning and development required for the specialist therapeutic learning environment that Harmeny promotes. Applicants should be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. A driving licence allowing the use of our vehicles is essential.

A fuller job description and person specification outlining the knowledge, skills and experience required can be found using the link below.

An excellent benefits package is offered including the following:

§  A salary of £32,994 to £41,412* depending on experience (*please note that these figures may increase when the inflationary increase for 2021 has been agreed)

§  Teachers’ pension scheme

§  Policies and practices that promote a healthy work-life balance and wellbeing, including massage therapy, access to fitness equipment and a wellbeing space

We are highly committed to the professional development of all our staff and the post-holder will have access to comprehensive training and development opportunities as well as other employee benefits.
