This is an exciting opportunity for someone to gain experience working within the Building Standards team in City of Edinburgh Council’s Building Standards service and obtain a recognised qualification in the process. Your duties will include working within the Building Standards team to assist in ensuring construction works in Edinburgh are designed and built to a safe standard and in such a way to conserve fuel and power to assist in achieving Scotland’s transition to net zero emissions by 2045.

You will have an involvement in a wide variety of construction projects, ranging from minor domestic works up to multi-million-pound capital projects. You will also work towards obtaining and HNC level qualification in Architectural Technology during years 1 & 2 of the apprenticeship with the option of obtaining further formal qualifications in years 3 & 4.

Building Standards is responsible for a wide range of services including the following:

• Processing Building Warrant applications, including assessment of plans, specifications and calculations, and the issue of warrants and completion certificates

• Inspection and monitoring of developments being implemented on site, to ensure compliance with Building Warrant approvals.

• Assess work carried out without consent and take action, including issue of appropriate authorisations.

• To inspect buildings and take action in terms of Section 27 of the Building (Scotland) Act – (unauthorised buildings); and inspections and action under Section 29/30 – (dangerous buildings), including authorisation of remedial works and evacuation of buildings

• Inspection of temporary structures, such as stages and grandstands at events. The Individual

These opportunities do not require you to have any experience in Building Standards. What we do require is:

• One Higher at Grade C or above and three National 5s at grade C or above, which must include maths

• An understanding of Building Standards

• An understanding of the importance of Health and Safety

• An understanding of the benefits of effective teamwork and customer care principles

• A willingness to learn and adapt to the working and college environment

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.  For roles in grade 5 or above, annual increments in our contribution zones are dependent on achieving agreed performance goals.
