Otudoor Learning Instructor - Volunteer
Benmore Outdoor Centre

We are seeking four individuals to join our Instructor Development Scheme; placements are normally for a year and begin in August at the start of the academic year. Applications and expression of interest are welcome all year round and extensions to the year may be considered.

Benmore Outdoor Centre is based in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs national park near Dunoon. Successful candidates will have the enviable opportunity to live and work in a spectacular National Park location.

You will be trained by Benmore’s established instructional team in one of The City of Edinburgh Council’s highly regarded Outdoor Learning establishments - gaining invaluable industry work experience and varied training and development opportunities including NGB qualifications.

Benmore’s course program is largely focused on inspiring adventures in wild offsite locations - placements are aimed at those with an active interest and ability in adventurous outdoor activities such as hill walking, climbing, mountain biking, watersports, sailing and caving.

A desire to work with teachers and pupils particularly P7’s is essential. Our core purpose is to deliver outstanding residential experiences that are tailored to national outcomes and individual needs. Courses are centred around the Scottish curriculum for Excellence - during your training you will help to facilitate and encourage young people to be successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors. Teaching them to respect the interests of others, build a love for the environment, and take shared responsibility for their learning and own actions which will support development of personal and social skills, teamwork, and leadership.

This post is considered Regulated Work with Vulnerable Children and/or Protected Adults, under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Preferred candidates will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check prior to a formal offer of employment being made by the City of Edinburgh Council.

As this is a voluntary position, PVG costs will be met by City of Edinburgh Council on this occasion.

We're committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.

Requirements

This is an unpaid placement- however, you will receive a £30 weekly food allowance, meals provided whilst working, self-catering cottage accommodation a short walk from centre and £1000 training budget.

You will have access to advice and support to go adventuring in your own time to consolidate your personal skills and assist with the achievement of your NGB’s. As you progress through the scheme and gain more experience and qualifications there may be an opportunity to undertake paid work as a trainee instructor to complement your placement.

During operational hours- you will either be shadowing and assisting instructors in the delivery of high-quality outdoor learning courses, participating in personal development as recommended by mentors (working towards relevant NGB qualifications), engaging in facilities and maintenance work or being trained by instructors/lead instructors. In addition to the core activities, you will undertake training and gain hands on understanding of the day-to-day operation of a Centre, successful candidates will be required to support the delivery of residential evening sessions each week and contribute to weekend and holiday operations.

The development scheme requires a high level of commitment from you for 12 months, in return you will develop first hand group coaching and instructional skills, national qualifications and a realistic insight into the life and work of an outdoor instructor.

This will be a challenging yet rewarding experience which will prepare you for an exciting career in this sought-after industry.

Age and circumstances are not a barrier- we invite applications from all candidates who match the advert and criteria.
