Job Description

Working within the Communities Department, you will be required to enforce through various reactive and proactive means the range of trading standards and consumer protection law, including carrying out the statutory duties of a weights and measures inspector, and provide advice to consumers and businesses in the Outer Hebrides. You will enhance and protect the health, safety and wellbeing of the community by empowering and informing consumers, encouraging honest businesses and targeting rogue traders and rogue trading practices. You will liaise with internal and external agencies, addressing issues relevant to trading standards enforcement and developing and implementing appropriate strategies.

Requirements

It is essential that you hold the Diploma in Trading Standards (DTS), the equivalent Diploma in Consumer and Trading Standards (DCATS) or CTSI Professional Competency Framework (CTSP) qualification which includes the Weights & Measures module. You must be highly motivated with the ability to work on own initiative, including planning and organising own work, assessing priorities and meeting deadlines. In addition you must have: experience in trading standards work with sound technical and legal knowledge; the ability to understand traders’ problems and take account of local factors; the ability to give unwelcome decisions assertively; a proactive and proportionate approach to regulation; excellent verbal and written communication skills; a full driving licence and use of a vehicle.

Salary for the above post is inclusive of Distant Islands Allowance. Appointment to the post will be on the first point of grade with annual incremental progression.
