Job Description

Based at Marchbanks Depot, you will work full time, 37 hours per week.


You will have a relevant degree or equivalent qualification and professional qualification in a relevant area.


As a key member of the extended management team within Neighbourhood Services, the Service Manager – Waste Management will oversee the operational management of all waste related services within Dundee.

This involves delivering a professional waste service which contributes to the provision of quality environmental services in Dundee, as defined within the context of the council plan, service plan and other specific objectives.

The role also includes leading processes to support the transformation agenda involving frontline waste operations and managing complex improvement projects and activities; and managing waste improvement leads and the waste strategy team.

You will also contribute to the formulation and delivery of wider strategy and will provide support to Elected Members as required. Provide leadership for the effective delivery of all allocated functions, developing strategy, providing support and managing performance so that the Service is positioned to respond appropriately to changes required.

The Individual

You will have relevant experience as a Waste Management Professional, experience of project management, implementing strategic plans and policies and of preparing and presenting reports and performance management information. Experience of working in a multi-discipline setting, budget management, monitoring, forecasting and assessment and of analysing/diagnosing business problems and providing solutions are also required.

You will have the ability to network across the market and develop new client opportunities and relationships and have experience of negotiating with contractors. You will also have experience in a strategic role which has involved the monitoring and management of highly detailed contracts.

You will have a wide knowledge of current solid waste collection trends and practices, of relevant current and forthcoming initiatives, waste technologies, developments and legislative environment.

In addition, you will have experience of managing front line/logistically-based services and of dispute resolution processes and in achieving positive outcomes.

You will have excellent leadership, organisational, communication, IT and inter-personal skills and be customer centred in all aspects of service delivery.

You will be committed to continuous professional development and in encouraging others to participate in development activities.

A full current driving licence is required.
