It is East Lothian Council's policy that successful applicants will be placed on the first point of the salary scale. The salary advertised is full time (35 hours per week, 52 weeks per year).  Part-time hours / sessional posts will be pro-rated accordingly.

This is a 39 week sessional post i.e. working hours will be during school term time plus in-service days

Whilst this post is advertised as being 10 hours per week, there are plans to extend the days and times of opening to provided part of the 1140 hours entitlement to 2 year olds.  This will increase the number of hours contracted for staff.  It is anticipated that this change will take place during the 2022 – 2023 academic year.

East Lothian Council are looking to appoint a suitably qualified, creative, innovative and reflective childcare practitioner who puts play at the heart of learning for young children.  As Tots and Teens also provides practical work life experience opportunities for Pupils from within the High School, you must have experience of working with young children and as part of a team in a group care setting.   You will have a sound knowledge of play and take a pedagogical approach to children's learning.    You will assist the Senior Play Leader in planning and providing experiences, opportunities and learning for children aged 2- 3 years, encouraging and supporting play as a tool for learning using both the indoor and outdoor environments.   This post requires an appropriate early learning and childcare qualification,  along with extensive knowledge and experience in working with children aged 2- 3 years and their families.  The successful applicant will be a good team player who is reflective in their practise, pro-active within the playroom and is comfortable and confident speaking to a broad range of people including our Pupil volunteers.

Although the post is initially temporary to 1 July 2022 it is anticipated it will be extended to school session 2022/23.


Job Details

To work with and support the Senior Play Leader to create a warm, friendly, creative, safe and caring environment for children aged 2-5 years with a particular focus on children aged 2-3 years, some of whom may be considered as vulnerable.

To support parents in their role and in conjunction with the Senior Play Leader offer advice, guidance, support and encouragement to pupils involved in the Tots and Teens Programme.

Job Requirements

Relevant Qualifications
Educated to HNC or SVQ Level 3 in CCLD or equivalent and able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills and competencies gained through relevant experience.
