This is a unique and exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic and committed Pupil Support Worker to be part of a team at the Communication Provision in East Lothian for secondary aged pupils with autism and communication difficulties who require a highly individualised and adapted approach to teaching and learning.  

The Communication Provision is part of Knox Academy, known as Meadowpark, which is a short walking distance away and will provide places for pupils from across the county. Staff and pupils will be based in a beautiful converted former Victorian building which was formerly home to Haddington Infant School.

The Provision offers pupils and staff extensive facilities including a sensory room, activity room, fully accessible meeting area, staff base, therapy rooms as well as generous outdoor space and ICT support. There is also a fully fitted apartment for pupils to develop independent living skills as they reach the Senior Phase.
The staff team is key to the success of this provision as pupil numbers increase over time to a maximum of almost 40. 

The successful candidate will be a member of a new and dynamic team and must be enthusiastic and energetic. Candidates must have the ability to communicate their experience and enthusiasm to engage pupils that have Communication difficulties mostly related to Autism and associated challenging behaviours.   Learning will take place either in the classroom setting or offering continuity for pupils with particular challenges that may involve working 1:1 or with small extracted groups intensely. 
Proven experience of working with vulnerable young people, some of who may require personal care is essential, as is the ability to be flexible to deliver alternative curriculum opportunities for pupils, both in and off the school campus.  

A commitment to ongoing professional development is desirable.

Job Details

As part of the Pupil Support Team, provide support to secondary aged pupils (including Pupil Support Base) with a range of social emotional and behavioural difficulties in accordance with agreed aims, objectives and standards.

Job Requirements

Relevant Qualifications
A minimum of SVQ1/Standard Grade General level English/Maths or National 4
English/Maths or Literacy/Numeracy or Intermediate 1 Communication/Numeracy and/or able to demonstrate equivalent knowledge, skills and competencies gained through relevant experience.

This post is considered as Regulated Work with vulnerable children and/or protected adults, as specified in the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007.
