Preston Lodge High School is a non-denominational secondary school serving the communities of Cockenzie, Port Seton, Longniddry and Prestonpans. Our roll is currently 979. The school is a very short distance from Edinburgh, and is very well served by public transport, making it quicker to reach Prestonpans by train or bus from Waverley Station than to reach the south side of Edinburgh.
In June 2010 we were inspected and the particular strengths of the school were found to be:
- The high morale and improving ethos of the school community
- The contributions of young people to improvements in the climate for learning
- The work of staff across the school in supporting young people’s learning
- The strong leadership of the Head teacher on school improvement.
Since then, our motivated staff, students, families and the community we serve have worked hard to further improve all aspects of our school.
More about us
In partnership with Cramlington Learning Village in Northumberland, we have engaged all our staff in a fundamental examination of lesson planning and practice, which has resulted in the Preston Lodge Accelerated Learning Cycle. Full details of our approach to learning can be found on our website at http://www.edubuzz.org/pllearning/. Our work is now focused on continuously improving our approach to classroom practice, in order to develop student and staff learning, with an emphasis on Making Thinking Visible. Key to this is the provision of proper time for teachers to collaboratively plan exciting lessons that stimulate all learners, and the Preston Lodge Learning Foundation employs a Head of Development to source financial support for this work.
Our PT Clasroom Practice, our strong Learning Skills programme, our annual Learning Festival, and a highly innovative in-school professional learning programme for our staff are just some examples of the focus that we give to this work. Our Teacher Leadership Academy is a cohort of the SCEL teacher leadership programme, and offers perhaps the best opportunity for professional learning in the country. Why not come along to our Learning Festival on 28 October, if you want to see more about learning at Preston Lodge?
Our staff and students work together to develop an understanding of not just what key skills should be learned by students, but how they should be learned, and why they are important. Our Numeracy team is in the vanguard of these developments, and the level of professional discussion and support within the team is very high. Students enjoy Mathematics at Preston Lodge, and you can gain a great insight into the culture of this Curricular Area by watching this short film.
Our new curriculum fully meets the expectations of Curriculum for Excellence, with a focus on two year courses at both Higher and National 5 for S4-6 students, and we are increasingly exploring alternative accreditation. For example, we are the biggest user of the Open Universities Young Applicants in Scottish Schools scheme. We were the first wireless network High School in East Lothian, and we have introduced Bring Your Own Device for young people.
One of our key aims is to maximise achievement and attainment for all our students. Examination results are much improved (2017's 3+ and 5+ Highers for S5 students set new school records) and a key priority for us is securing and retaining the highest quality of new staff. We are looking for highly motivated, open minded and innovative learners to join us and to help us secure positive futures for our young people.
This is an exciting time for Preston Lodge High School, and the community it serves. Further details about the school can be found on our website at www.prestonlodge.net
