Job Description

Paid Creative Roles on Scottish South Asian Stories project - Our Shared Cultural Heritage

Glasgow Museums and British Council are offering fourteen paid opportunities to write, act, produce, score and digitise a new social media series, as part of the ‘Our Shared Cultural Heritage’ project supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund. The series will be launched for South Asian Heritage Month 2021 to highlight the wealth of Scottish South Asian history in Glasgow and the surrounding areas.

Roles require commitment of 3-10 hours (in total) over a period of two months, dependant on role. They will be paid at Scottish Artist Union 2020/21 rates of pay, including the recommended 3% increase for COVID-19 support.

We are offering these paid opportunities to:
• 18-25 year olds based in Glasgow and surrounding areas
• Young people with an interest in writing, acting, music and digital design/branding and marketing
• Young people for whom this experience will enable them to gain further opportunities in their areas of interest
• Young people who are interested in Scottish South Asian heritage and representation, have experience working with Scottish South Asian communities or knowledge of Scottish South Asian communities

What is the project about?
Our Shared Cultural Heritage is a project run by British Council in partnership with Glasgow Museums and Manchester Museum and supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
As part of this project, we are offering fourteen paid opportunities, to people who are 18-25 years old and have an interest in Scottish South Asian heritage, to write, act, produce, score and digitise five new social media films.
These short monologue films will document Scottish South Asian histories. The monologues will be fictional and spoken by contemporary voices, but inspired by real histories and artifacts.
In Summer 2020 we released a pilot film in this format through Glasgow Museums’ social media accounts. You can watch the pilot, ‘Letter from a Lascar’, here, written and read by storyteller Gauri Raje:
During October Week 2020 we held a Digital Storytelling Club for people aged 11-17 years old with an interest in Scottish South Asian heritage. The stories produced during this time will inform the direction of the new short monologue films. The young people involved in writing these stories will also be involved in viewing your application videos and making selections alongside staff from Glasgow Museums and British Council.

How do I apply?
Click the 'apply' button where you'll be asked to register with Myjobscotland and submit a basic application. Once the application has been received, you'll be invited to submit a simple three-minute video introducing yourself, outlining and demonstrating your relevant skills and your interest in the project. You can use a phone, computer or other device to make the video.

What should I include in my application?
Depending on your area of interest you may wish to show us some acting, read us some writing, perform a piece of music or share your digital design portfolio. The video can be as simple as you talking to the camera. What matters is that you demonstrate skills in your area of interest, let us know about you and what interests you about being involved.
It will benefit your application to think about and include answers to the following questions when making your video:
• What is your interest or experience in Scottish South Asian heritage and culture?

• When have you used your own initiative in creative projects?

• How will this work help you to develop creatively in your area of interest? (This could include acting, writing, music or digital skills)

Application Packs

Alternative Application Packs can be requested in other formats for example, Large Print, Braille, Audio and other languages. To request an alternative Application Pack please phone 0141 287 1054.

Packs will be posted out to you within 3 working days of receiving your telephone request.

Please note the closing date of the job advert to ensure that you give yourself plenty of time to complete your application form and return it to us.
