Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 30 primary schools and 4 standalone Early Learning and Childcare settings. Our special school, Saltersgate, and special provisions in each locality provide support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 50 children to our largest secondary with approximately 1,600 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings.

Saltersgate School is situated within the Dalkeith Schools Community Campus and has capacity for around 100 children and young people with a wide range of complex and profound additional support needs. The school is a non-denominational primary and secondary school whose catchment area extends to the whole of Midlothian. It provides accommodation to meet both the needs of the classroom and specialist subject teachers. The school also accesses the campus facilities consisting of swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, gym halls, fitness suite, and assembly hall and outside sporting areas.

The school leadership team consists of a Head Teacher, 2 Depute Head Teachers, and 4 Principal Teachers. The school team consists of teaching staff, support staff and a range of health professionals including nursing, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and language therapists. Our school vision is to deliver a curriculum that is purposeful, sustainable and enjoyable for all pupils and equips each young person with skills for life, learning and work.
