Orkney Islands Council is looking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced practitioner to the post of Head Teacher at St Andrews Primary School following the appointment of the current Head Teacher to the post of Support Team Manager within Orkney Islands Council. We are seeking an energetic and committed primary school leader with good strategic leadership and management skills, who will, with the support of an enthusiastic and dedicated staff team, continue to lead, grow and develop the school for learning and teaching in the 21st century.
Orkney lies eight miles north of the Scottish mainland and is the smallest Local Authority in Scotland. There is a strong cultural life and visitors world-wide are attracted to the scenery, history and archaeology. Orkney is home to a cosmopolitan community of about 20,000 residents and, among its many attributes, offers a safe environment, excellent educational and recreational facilities, a community spirit and exceptional quality of life, with reasonably priced housing.
St Andrews is a thriving primary school in the East Mainland of Orkney catering for families in the parishes of Tankerness, Deerness and Holm. An extension to the existing facilities is currently under construction with an expected completion date of January of 2023. The current primary school roll this session 2022/23 is 164 children across 7 classes from P1-7. The Head Teacher of St Andrews has line management responsibility for a committed team of approximately 20 staff who are keen to continue to meet the needs of the children and develop the school further. The school is very well supported by the Parent Council and wider community in the East Mainland.
The school site is also shared with the Early Learning and Childcare setting which is run by a separate Early Learning and Childcare Manager. The current role is 44 children. The ELC Manager and the Head Teacher work closely together for the benefit of the whole school community.
Applicants must be registered, or in the process of registering with, the General Teaching Council for Scotland and be able to demonstrate that they have, through both experience and professional development, met the criteria in the Standard for Headship. As Head Teacher you will be part of the Education Service management team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of education in Orkney as a whole.
This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.
For a discussion about the post, or for further information about living and working in Orkney, please contact Morag Miller, Service Manager (Primary Education) by e-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org.
Salary is currently based on Point 5 of the Headteachers spine of the SNCT Salary Tables, plus an Islands Allowance, but is subject to Job Sizing. We offer a generous relocation package.
Closing date: Sunday 23 October 2022
Please note that interview/resettlement expenses will be paid for this post in line with Council policy.
