Orkney Islands Council is looking for an experienced Environmental Services Manager withthe drive, vision and commitment to take forward their future wasteand recycling strategy and ensure that services reflect the needs of the local communities, the current and future regulatory and legislative environments and provide best value to the Council.

A key part of this role will be to drivethe development of the proposed Integrated Waste Facility which will see a step-change in Orkney’s ability to collect and process recyclable materials and act as an enabler forthe development of circular economy opportunities in the County. In addition, you will be responsible for the development and delivery of policies and strategies, management of the collection and treatment of materials and accountable for the operational delivery of the service which provides kerbside collections to households across Orkney Mainland and the Isles. The Council also operates two Waste Transfer Stations, 3 Household Waste Recycling Centres and 2 Recycling Centres together with a number of recycling points.

The Council is going through an exciting and challenging period with a recent re-organisation seeing full management of all environmental services brought into one team. As part of your role you will be expected to oversee the implementation of this change and, working closely with your counterpart in the Roads and Grounds area look to ensure the most efficient and effective use of the small but dedicated workforce.
Excellent communication and facilitation skills, together with a sound, practical knowledge of waste and recycling legislation will be a requirement, in addition to significant relevant management experience and a proven ability to lead and manage complex change projects.
