Are you passionate about inclusion, about equity and about participation for all? Do you believe everyone should have the best opportunities in education? If so, this could be the perfect opportunity for you to turn your values into actions.

Shetland Islands Council is recruiting to four peripatetic Teacher of Additional Support Needs (ASN) posts. These full-time and permanent posts offer a unique opportunity for qualified and innovative teachers with experience of working with children and young people with additional support needs in formal educational settings to work across schools and sectors to ensure all our children and young people do indeed have the best opportunities to thrive and succeed.

Successful candidates will join the centrally based Inclusion team and will work closely with our Education Outreach and Educational Psychology colleagues and in partnership with others in Children’s Services, the wider SIC, and colleagues in NHS and the voluntary sector to improve outcomes for children and young people with ASN and their families. A good understanding of Nurture and Relationship-based practice will be essential for these roles.

Although these posts will be aligned to work directly with specific Associated School Groups within Shetland, each post holder will enjoy areas of responsibility and specialism within the Inclusion remit such as dyslexia, autism, emotional and behavioural support, equalities and diversity to name a few. The posts may also align to particular areas of the curriculum and sectors of the education system, depending on the experience and knowledge of the successful candidates.

There will be a requirement to attend schools in person, and post holders will be based in a school across the Shetland mainland or in Hayfield House in Lerwick. Applicants should have the ability to travel throughout Shetland at short notice where required as public transport is limited.

Shetland is an archipelago in the north of the British Isles where you’ll find freedom, wildlife and wild beauty, but also a rich culture and a dynamic, forward-looking society. The islands have a thriving and diverse economy full of opportunities and offer residents the ideal work/life balance. Shetland combines stunning coastal landscapes and wide open spaces with friendly, bustling island communities. With abundant leisure, sports and creative pursuits to get involved in, you’ll never grow bored living in Shetland.
