Director of IT

Commencing August 2017, this post offers the successful candidate a senior position at this outstanding 5 – 18 HMC school. Dollar lies in a beautiful rural location between the university cities of Stirling and St Andrews, about 40 minutes north of Edinburgh. It is one of the largest HMC schools in Scotland with around 1200 pupils. Academic standards are high and the school has a reputation for excellence in all fields.

This post will offer an exciting leadership opportunity to an enthusiastic, well-qualified candidate. Experience of managing IT operations is essential, preferably from within the education sector.

The Director of IT has overall accountability for every aspect of IT provision (both academic and administrative) at Dollar Academy and reports directly to the Rector.

Key Areas of Responsibility

The Director of IT has responsibility for strategic planning of IT matters. He/she will be responsible for producing a long-term IT development plan and subsequent annual action plans. He/she is responsible for preparing budget submissions, both capital and revenue, working closely with the Rector and Bursar. These will reflect the school’s agreed priorities, having ascertained users’ needs. He/she will chair the IT Working Group (and any other working parties as necessary). He/she will be responsible for developing the use of IT, so that staff and pupils can work together in a holistic environment supporting the goal of being a world-class learning and teaching establishment.

The Director of IT will implement and maintain a team-based approach to service delivery and project management. He/she will be the line manager for all members of the IT Department including the Database Manager, IT Trainer and the Reprographics room. He/she will carry out regular staff reviews for each member of the IT Department, and set development targets as necessary. He/she will work with the IT Trainer to ensure that new staff and pupils receive IT induction training. He/she will work with the IT Trainer (and other staff as necessary) to ensure that staff and pupils are able to gain the maximum advantage out of existing and new systems, and that the appropriate level of on-going training is achieved.

The Director of IT will set service standards by agreement, and oversee the Service Support system (help desk), providing all users of IT with routine problem solving and support. He/she will oversee contractors working on site and ensure that their work is fully coordinated and causes the minimum of disruption to the educational life of the school. This will include ensuring that regular maintenance contracts are in place. He/she will develop, implement and monitor the school’s practices for data protection, internet use and filtering, email, security and IT resource management. He/she will ensure that the network is operational, that the school’s firewall security systems are maintained, and that appropriate back-up protocols and disaster recovery plans are implemented. He/she will manage out of hours support for scheduled and emergency scenarios. He/she will ensure that all legal requirements affecting IT are complied with, such as licenses, disposal of equipment, etc. He/she will ensure that the school’s IT asset register is maintained and accurate.

The Director of IT will oversee PASS and 3Sys, the school’s management information system, and will work closely with the Database Manager, Registrar, School Office and Bursar’s Office.

This post is full time and permanent. Salary will be competitive, and will depend on experience and qualifications. A reduction on school fees is available for staff children being educated at the school.
