The Directorate of School Professional Services (SPS) provides support for three Academic Schools; Registry, Technical Services and Administration teams. The directorates focus is to provide an outstanding service to all our users supporting and enhancing the student experience.

SPS Technical Services (Science) is seeking an energetic, flexible and motivated Technical Assistant (Science) to support the delivery of GCU programmes in Biological and Biomedical Sciences (BIO). As a Technical Assistant (Science), you will be a core member of the Technical Team delivering a range of services that support teaching, learning and assessment across a busy multi-disciplinary department.

While working within a well-established team of technicians the role holder will be required to operate within established procedures and deliver support for the day to day operational needs of the department including; Assisting in the preparation of all Under Graduate (UG) practical programmes, assisting in the clearing of all laboratory areas and housekeeping duties such as equipment maintenance and storage. 

Candidates should have a National Certificate in a Biological Sciences/Technical Science subject and possess the ability to demonstrate essential key competencies with the equivalent relevant experience.  Essential requirements for this role include:

  • Relevant experience working in a practical Biology laboratory.
  • Ability to manage and prioritise conflicting workloads.
  • Experience of undertaking a range of technical support activities without constant guidance.
  • Manual handling experience.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of Health & Safety policies and procedures within a laboratory environment.
  • Ability to work flexibly and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
