The Library Service supports the university by delivering a customer focused service that ensures we provide high quality support and relevant resources for students, staff and the community. The Resource Services team is responsible for resource acquisition and management, the reading lists service and the digitisation service and as an Assistant Librarian you will play a key role in delivering these services.
Key duties will include operational management of the Resource Services team, managing the acquisitions processes for information resources, and responsibility for the delivery and development of the reading list service. You will be enthusiastic with a proactive approach and a desire to learn new skills. You will have excellent communication skills, be organised, pay attention to detail and have strong management and interpersonal skills. You will also be able to work as part of a team and independently.
This post is currently a mix of on campus working at the Garthdee Campus in Aberdeen (4 days a week) and working from home (1 day a week). Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.
RESPONSIBLE TO: Resource Services Librarian
RESPONSIBLE FOR: Resource Services Supervisor - Resource Management and Metadata; Financial Administrator/Admin Assistant
PURPOSE OF POST:
To manage, participate in, and help develop the library’s resource services operations to provide an efficient, effective and sustainable service to the university.
To manage the operational work of the resource services team in order to ensure the provision of a high quality, innovative, customer-focused service.
The resource services team is responsible for resource acquisition, cataloguing, resource management, the reading lists service, and the digitisation service.
Manage and develop the resource services team; to include recruitment and selection, induction, training, performance management and annual reviews.
Manage, develop and participate in the acquisitions process, from ordering to invoicing, for information resources including books, eBooks, print and electronic journals and databases. This work will be done with the Resource Services Librarian and Financial Administrator.
Liaison with a range of suppliers and subscription agents with regards to day-to-day activities, such as ordering, renewals pricing queries, claims, cancellations, and delivery.
Support the Resource Services Supervisor - Resource Management and Metadata in ensuring resources are discoverable and accessible.
Work in close partnership with the Academic Support Team and academic staff to ensure that our information resources are fit for purpose and meet the expectations of our staff, students, and researchers.
Take operational responsibility for the delivery and development of the reading list service including maintaining an overview of the service, supervising list creation, ordering required resources, promotion of the service, training team members and monitoring and implementing new developments.
Library management system
Develop expert knowledge of the appropriate modules on the library management system and keep that knowledge up to date.
Deliver training on the library management system to Resource Services Team members as appropriate and with support from the Systems Team.
Develop, manage, document and monitor systems, procedures, workflows and processes required to undertake the work of the Resource Services Team.
Manage and participate in the enquiry answering duties of the team, dealing with queries received by email, phone and in person and taking the lead for complex queries.
Resource Services Librarian support
Support the work of the Resource Services Librarian with regards to financial planning, license management and statistical analysis of the resource collections.
Contribute to strategic and operational policy and planning activities for the Resource Services team.
Deputise for the Resource Services Librarian as appropriate.
Undertake other duties in functions cognate to the responsibilities of this post.
Maintain an awareness of health and safety issues for self, colleagues and library users.
Maintain an understanding of appropriate policies and regulations e.g. copyright law, GDPR, etc.
Undertake continuing professional development in line with service requirements.
Support the work of other library teams as appropriate to the post and in line with Department business needs.
Adapt duties to the changing requirements of the role over time.
Qualifications and Professional Requirements
Educated to degree level in a relevant discipline
Knowledge and skills
Knowledge of the UK HE environment
Knowledge of the library acquisitions and information resources environment including the processes involved, pressures, challenges and opportunities for development
Experience of working in an academic or research library

Chartered Librarian or equivalent library related professional qualification
