Job Summary

RGU and the Net Zero Technology Centre have partnered to create the National Subsea Centre (NSC), a multi-million-pound Centre of Excellence for Subsea Research and Technology development.

The NSC will harness the University’s academic expertise, research capability and facilities to establish a world-class research and development centre focused on tackling the underwater challenges faced by all marine industries tackling sustainable economic development. There will be a focus on applied digital science coupled with subsea engineering and energy integration. We aim to accelerate the development and adoption of marine engineering and technologies that unlock the full potential of the UKCS as a sustainable energy hub that builds upon the UK’s leadership in a growing global market. The NSC will be working across industrial sectors (oil and gas, offshore marine renewables, marine aquaculture) within the context of the Blue economy.

The post being offered is a Research Fellow/Senior Research Fellow in Transparent Ocean Oriented Deep Learning and Remote Sensing Technologies. Appointments will be decided on the academic quality and potential of the candidates. The post is intended to support the research work of the Transparent Ocean team within the National Subsea Centre. The team applies novel data science and artificial intelligence research to challenging real-world problems.

We are especially interested in candidates with expertise in the following areas:

• Deep learning algorithms (e.g. convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, generative adversarial networks, and graph convolutional networks)

• Deep learning for computer vision and image processing (e.g. large-scale object detection and recognition, visual saliency detection, image/video description and visual question generation)

• Deep learning for image fusion and smart decision-making (e.g. multimodal images including hyperspectral, RGB, LiDAR, sonar, and SAR images etc)

• Deep learning-based autonomous driving (e.g. self-driving cars and underwater autonomous vehicles) • Deep learning-based remote and environmental sensing (e.g. ecosystem and climate change monitoring, pollution detection, and flooding, etc)

• Intelligent robotics (social assistant and underwater robots)

• Deep learning-based time series modelling and prediction (e.g. using sensor and/or visual data, data visualisation)

• Machine learning and probabilistic modelling

• Evolutionary algorithms and industrial optimization

Our research has a strong focus on robust real-world applications and so a flexible skill set, strong publication record and experience in successful delivery of industrial projects are key requirements of the roles. Experience in proposal preparation is highly desirable.

Person Specification

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Membership

PhD in Computing, Engineering or related discipline, or close to submission of the thesis.

Knowledge and Skills

Artificial Intelligence methods related to machine learning, deep learning, image fusion, probabilistic modelling, computational intelligence and/or data modelling.

Experience

Strong programming skills and an extensive experience in developing methods and algorithms for deep learning, machine learning, image fusion, big data analytics, and statistical modelling applications.
