Job Summary

The role of Academic Team Lead relates to leadership of Undergraduate distance learning and work-based courses within the Department of Management at Aberdeen Business School which include:

• BA (Hons) Business Management

• Graduate Apprenticeship in BA (Hons) Business and Management

An established academic, you will be ready for the next stage of your career in which, as well as inspiring students through your teaching, you will be keen to develop and inspire junior academic staff through the early stages of their career.

You'll have an honours degree and masters’ degree in a relevant discipline and will ideally possess a PhD or be in the writing-up stage. With that you'll bring significant teaching and learning experience within a business school environment and will also have some experience of course management. We are particularly interested in candidates who have knowledge and experience of work-based learning in its many forms.

Specific duties of the ATL role include course management, course marketing, leading on course development activity, oversight of the annual course appraisal process, liaison with relevant professional bodies and external examiners, monitoring of student feedback and performance, chairing appropriate Programme Management Team meetings and contributing to School Academic Board meetings, leading on course enhancement projects, preparing quality assurance documentation and leading student liaison activity. The Academic Team Lead engages in recruitment and promotional activity for all courses within his/her remit and is responsible for the overall student learning experience.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Academic Strategic Lead  

RESPONSIBLE FOR: Supervisory responsibility for lecturing staff (Grade 8 and below) as delegated by the Academic Strategic Lead.

PURPOSE OF THE POST: To oversee the operation, monitoring and on-going development of the allocated courses within Aberdeen Business School.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

Supervisory responsibility.

This post recognises the importance of the need to maintain the highest quality of delivery and student performance in line with the University Academic Quality Standards.

You will engage in recruitment and promotional activity for all courses within your remit and will be responsible for the overall student learning experience. The ATL will work with the Academic Strategic Lead and Head of School in ensuring target numbers for admission to courses are achieved, working in collaboration with Marketing and Admissions.

An overview of the established activities relating to this role is provided below:

• Course management and development • Acts as “Team Leader” for the Courses, ensuring there is on-going liaison with all those involved in delivery, including staff in other

• Communication and liaison with Module Co-ordinators responsible for teaching on the Courses is of prime

• Inputs, as appropriate, to recruitment, marketing and admissions

• Ensures, in liaison with ASL, that appropriate arrangements/resources are in place for the delivery of the Courses (Moodle, timetabling, teaching, library and other support functions) with the aim of providing a positive learning environment for

• Ensures that approved Course documentation is up-to-date.

• Oversees the effective implementation of the University’s quality assurance and annual monitoring processes including:

• Annual appraisal;

• Analysis of student questionnaires and student feedback;

• Student liaison;

• Circulation of and response to External Examiners’ Annual Reports;

• Participation, as required, in quality assurance events e.g. Institution-Led Review, Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body

• Ensures that sufficient and appropriate External Examiners are appointed to the Courses and remains the central point for communication/liaison with

• Undertakes various committee responsibilities e.g. is a member of the School Academic Board, will normally act as Convener of the Programme Management Team, is a core member of all relevant Assessment Boards and inputs as appropriate to Staff/Student Liaison and Employer/Industrial Liaison

• Deals, as appropriate, with cases of suspected misconduct and student appeals.

• Oversees the processing of agreed Course changes and developments, ensuring appropriate consultation with colleagues, External Examiners, students, Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body,

• Ensures there is appropriate on-going employer/industrial/ professional liaison, often acting as the main point of contact with external stakeholders e.g. Professional, Statutory and Regulatory

• Undertakes duties, as appropriate, where approved academic collaboration exists, including ensuring that there are contracts and agreements in place for these collaborations.

• Undertakes the quality assurance procedures required in respect of collaboration agreements and partnerships.

• Ensures there is health, safety and risk assessment monitoring where appropriate g. for placements, practical activities, fieldwork etc.

• Ensures that we comply with appropriate accreditation requirements where these pertain for particular courses.

• Involvement in University committees and enhancement activities as delegated by the Head of School.

ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS

Qualifications and Professional Memberships

MSc (or equivalent) in relevant discipline

First Degree in any discipline

Knowledge

Familiarity with Academic Regulations and quality assurance procedures.

Experience

Significant teaching and learning experience within the Higher Education sector.

Course management experience.
