The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) is delighted to invite applications for the role of Volunteer Youth Instructor based across Scotland with current vacancies within the Youth Volunteer Schemes in Alloa, Benbecula, Campbeltown, Coatbridge, Helensburgh, Kilmarnock, Lerwick, Edinburgh, Livingston, Peterhead, Stranraer and Wick.
The SFRS Youth Volunteer Scheme is delivered by the SFRS in local fire stations across Scotland for young people between the ages of 12 – 18. It is one of Scotland’s newest uniformed youth organisations with the vision of impacting young people by enhancing opportunities for further education, employment and training.
Its main objective is to provide a safe environment in which young people can learn as individuals, develop positive relationships with the SFRS and actively support their community. The scheme will provide young people with varied activities and opportunities to develop learning, enhance inter-personal skills and confidence and achieve a sense of pride through representing SFRS in their communities.
Volunteers are essential to everything we do in this programme and we are committed to providing the best possible volunteering experience for everyone who gives their time to the SFRS with a view to helping us fulfill the objectives of the SFRS Youth Volunteer Scheme.
To join us in achieving these exciting objectives we are looking for patient and approachable individuals who genuinely enjoy working with young people and have an understanding of the challenges that young people are currently facing. Candidates will also have a high level of awareness of confidentiality and acceptable levels of written and oral communication skills. Candidates must have a good grasp of Health and Safety practices and processes with great interpersonal skills to enable them to develop and maintain effective relationships with the young people and other team members.
Experience of working within the public, community or voluntary sector in a similar role would be an asset. A Youth Work qualification and a track record of successfully supporting similar projects would also be advantageous.
This post is subject to the provision of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exclusions and Exemptions) Scotland Order 2013. Successful candidates will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme and are expected to maintain this while they are volunteering.
