Kibble is Scotland’s specialist provider of services for at risk children and young people. By providing a range of integrated services, we help build positive futures for children and young people aged 5 plus, with complex social, emotional and educational needs.

Job Purpose:

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a nurse to join our Health and Wellbeing Team. You will be responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of evidence-based programmes of care for young people with complex health and care needs. This is achieved by using risk assessment, care plans, effective clinical judgement, and decision-making skills. You will also be responsible for the health assessments and the delivery of high standards of care for young people with a range of mental health disorders, substance misuse, learning disability or co-morbidity, under the supervision of the caseload holder.

Responsibilities

  • To undertake comprehensive health assessments for young people assessing their physical and emotional health, medication and lifestyle factors. Providing a detailed report and action plan to inform the young person’s care planning.
  • To facilitate the outreach NHS services within Kibble e.g., sexual health, immunisations and support the young people to access them.
  • Promote a healthy lifestyle and well-being, providing advice to young people in line with the national health promotion strategy and mental health and wellbeing strategy.
  • Attend, participate and support young people in multi-disciplinary team meetings, case conferences and mental health assessments as necessary and contribute to case discussions and reviews on a regular basis.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the determinants of ill health and appropriate interventions. Be aware and give advice on issues relating to health education/promotion and health improvement.
  • Support with critical incidents such as self-harming and suicidal behaviours.
  • Support the implementation of the Electronic Medication System across the services.
  • Providing cover for specialist nurse for LAC.
  • Delivering staff training – medication, self-harm etc.
  • Support the health promotion agenda across the campus including education.
  • Working with the specialist intervention service - attending meetings for interventions in relation to self-harm and suicidal behaviours etc.
  • Working with NHS service providers such as FCAMHS, CAMHS, dentist, opticians etc

Communication and Relationships

  • Responsible for the development of therapeutic relationships with our young people.
  • Communicate highly complex information regarding the management of mental and physical health problems to colleagues and other disciplines/professions, young people and carers in a manner that is clear and easily understood.
  • Communicate with young people and their relatives using a variety of communication skills, for example active listening and communicating with young people with impaired communication skills due to their development disorder or mental health.
  • Be able to communicate with all colleagues in a professional manner.
  • Be able to communicate with colleagues in other organisations in a professional manner.
  • Practice and always promote confidentiality upholding NMC code of conduct.
  • Deal with distressed, upset, angry or anxious young people.
  • Use communication skills to de-escalate conflict situations ensuring the safety of self and others.
  • Ensure that written communications meet the NMC Code to keep clear and accurate records.

Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Registered children’s nurse (RCN), Learning Disability Nurse (LD) or Mental Health Nurse (MNH)
  • Registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
  • Previous varied experience in a relevant clinical setting is desirable e.g. working in the fields of primary care, mental health, public health and/or working in a secure environment.
  • Awareness of the needs of young people who have experienced complex trauma in relation to mental health support.

4. The successful candidate will be required to undertake Safe Crisis Management (SCM) training and will require a level of fitness to be able to carry out SCM. The successful candidate must be able to participate fully in this training and be prepared to put this training into practice. The SCM training will consist of two days theory and two days physical training. The successful candidate must complete this training in full within four weeks of an agreed start date. Should the candidate for any reason fail any aspect of the SCM training (theory, physical or both parts), an additional two weeks will be given to pass.

5. Appointments will be subject to a twelve-month probationary period.
