Public Health Scotland is a new organisation, set up to improve the lives of people in Scotland, to reduce health inequalities that persist in many of our communities. It’s an exciting time to join the organisation, with PHS at the forefront of Scotland’s efforts to tackle Coronavirus and its implications across society.

We are recruiting a Head of Economy and Poverty to lead our work in this significant area. Poverty has a cumulative negative effect on people’s health throughout their life and is at the root of much of the ill health and reduced life chances we see across Scotland. This is a chance to make a real difference.

You will be joining a new senior team, working hard to bring about changes to improve outcomes for people across Scotland. We are committed to building a Public Health Scotland with a focus on impact and solutions.

You will be a very experienced leader who has already worked at a senior level within a large, complex organisation. You will have a track record of working with multiple stakeholders in the public sector and beyond, delivering and embedding real change within an organisation and across organisational boundaries. You will have vision and imagination and will be change, action and results oriented.

The post-holder should have expert specialist knowledge on poverty and the economy and change management skills acquired through degree level education, with an appropriate, relevant postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience.

The post will report directly to the Director of Place and Wellbeing at Public Health Scotland.

Location and Working Pattern

The post is based in either Gyle Square, Edinburgh or Meridian Court, Glasgow, though the successful candidate will largely be working from home initially. Applicants on any working pattern are welcome to apply for this post though it will be important that the candidate is able to attend Board meetings and Committees.

Further Information

During times of public health emergency, or other urgent business need you may be required on a temporary basis to work your normal contracted working hours over 7 days including weekends, in order to meet the needs of the service
