An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Environmental Health Officer to make a lasting positive contribution to improving public health and carbon reduction in Edinburgh.

The post is within the Council’s Placemaking and Mobility Service and will include supporting the Council in meeting its statutory and advisory air quality duties and climate change commitments.

The successful candidate will work with the team to tackle key sources of air pollution across the city. A good understanding of current issues, legislation, policy and guidance will be important to performing effectively in this role.

The successful candidate should have an appreciation of appropriate environmental controls and how air quality, public health and climate change matters can be interlinked, affected and improved by the design and operation of our streets, public spaces and new development.

Key duties will include undertaking review and assessment of the City’s air quality, action planning, and engaging with and advising stakeholders (internal and external) including supporting planning applications, dealing with enquiries and getting involved in health promotion campaigns.

The successful candidate will need to be highly motivated, proactive, enthusiastic, and be able to work effectively in a team comprising a variety of disciplines, including Planning and Transport. It is essential the post holder has strong communication skills and the ability to build key relationships, including those at senior management and Elected Member level.

The post holder is required to hold an appropriate professional qualification as defined under UK legislation for regulated professions. Possession of additional specific qualifications to support working in Environmental Health disciplines is also desirable.

The Placemaking and Mobility Service is passionate about making a positive difference and delivering great places in Scotland’s beautiful capital. There are many opportunities to learn across a variety of disciplines to ensure sustainability, public health, wellbeing, and inclusivity are at the heart of decision-making.

As part of our goal to improve our organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure that we’re bringing the best people into our roles, not just in their skills and experience but also in their approach to work.

To help achieve this, we’re changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. We're committed to creating a workplace culture where all our people feel valued, included and able to be their best at work, and we recognise the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings to us as an organisation.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
