Substance Use Team

An excellent opportunity has arisen for a specialist social worker in the Substance Misuse Team in Midlothian. The Team are based in NO 11 in Dalkeith: co-located with the Joint Mental Health Team, Justice Teams and a variety of Third Sector organisation staff. This post is in a busy team and the post holder shall contribute to the person centred, trauma informed approach that the whole building takes. You would need a genuine interest in working with people who use substances and have experience working within a busy, person-centred environment. Training opportunities will be provided as well as supervision and the opportunity to work in a multidisciplinary Team within an integrated service. There is a strong team spirit and a focus on delivering the best possible outcomes for our service users. Peer support in the team is well established and all staff have opportunities to liase with colleagues on a regular basis, both working autonomously in the community and in the office environment.

Number 11 can be busy and fast paced environment which allows professionals to come together quickly if needed, to make decisions and offer support to people who are experiencing distress in a number of areas of their lives.

The social work substance use team currently has 2 social workers and 2 social work practitioners. The focus of the team is on working primarily with people who are motivated to make positive changes relating to their substance use, assessments for residential rehab including funding applications and engaging with people with alcohol related brain damage to coordinate appropriate care interventions which may include assessing for guardianship/ adults with incapacity process. We also deal with a variety of referrals in relation to people who have substance use of any kind and the social workers in the team are at times responsible for assessing and providing/signposting to appropriate services. The team offers support and advice to other adult service teams within Midlothian in relation to substance use queries.

You need to have an interest in the field of substance use and the enthusiasm to undertake work that can at times be difficult and challenging. Some experience of mental health work would be preferable however the ability to demonstrate core social work values and skills is more important. You will have access to a primarily office based line manager, regular professional supervision and supportive colleagues.
