Principal Teacher, Primary Pupil Support - PKC07909
Almondbank House, Perth

In this role you will support the development of Support Teachers and Pupil Support Assistants, providing co-ordination, recruitment/deployment support, opportunities for CLPL, support to Headteachers and quality assurance for the teams.  In this role you will also have responsibility for Curriculum Accessibility with associated responsibilities and accountabilities listed below.

Main accountabilities as Principal Teacher:

  • provide co-ordination of Primary Pupil Support Teachers (PPST) across schools, and operational management for recruitment and deployment.
  • manage recruitment of Pupil Support Assistants (PSAs) and co-ordinate training to support them to develop the necessary skills and knowledge to undertake the role.
  • develop support, networks, and CLPL opportunities for PPSTs, PSAs and school staff to support development of inclusive practice.
  • lead self-evaluation and quality assurance of PPSTs delivery of support for children/young people in schools.
  • ensure equity of PPSTs across schools and co-ordination of the PPST Small School Model (SSM).
  • Work in collaboration with schools and families to ensure the needs of children are met through effective use of PPSTs .
  • provide advice, support and guidance to colleagues in relation to ASN and raising attainment.
  • co-ordinate development, implementation, monitoring and reporting of the Accessibility Strategy.
  • develop actions and provide advice to schools/parents as required to promote inclusion of children and young people from travelling backgrounds.

Additional Responsibilities

  • provide support for the Secondary Pupil Support Teachers through contribution to Curriculum Improvement Network (CIN).
  • undertake appropriate and agreed continuing professional development.
  • Work in partnership with agencies, to deliver development opportunities, and increase awareness of interventions or resources support the delivery of inclusive practice in Perth & Kinross through collaboration with Inclusion Service colleagues.
  • lead and develop the PKC Dyslexia Pathway and quality assure practitioners’ implementation.
  • contribute to PKC Literacy and Numeracy steering groups.
  • Education link for Accessible Technologies, including: CALL Scotland link, Accessible Technologies Panel; and national link for Assistive Technology for Learning Across Scotland (ATLAS).
  • Children Too Ill to Attend School - lead developments and provide advice to schools.
  • Armed Forces – national education link and to provide advice to schools if required.

The Individual

You must:

  • Have a diploma/degree in Primary Education.
  • Have full GTC Scotland registration.
  • Have proven experience as an effective classroom practitioner.
  • Have the ability to lead and manage change and improvement effectively.
  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge of delivering current curriculum and assessment approaches and developments and a knowledge of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE) and Assessment is for Learning (AIFL) and their bearing on classroom practice.
  • Have knowledge and experience of the application of positive behaviour management.
  • Have had experience of working with children with a range of additional support needs.
  • Be able to apply a variety of teaching strategies adapted to the needs and interests of the pupil.
  • Have experience in working with a range of external agencies.
  • Have experience of working closely with parents / carers.
  • Have experience of the use of information and communication technology (ICT) in the classroom and for management.
  • Have an understanding of national and local priorities.

Ideally you will:

  • Have a Post Graduate Qualification in Additional Support Needs.
  • Hold a professional qualification relating to Dyslexia.
  • Have experience of co-ordinating and managing a team.
  • Have experience of working with headteachers/managers to improve attainment
  • Have training and experience in Child Protection.
  • Be CALM theory trained or willing to undertake CALM theory training.
  • Have experience of dealing with children with a range of ASN.
  • Be aware of trauma informed practice.
