Cook Supervisor

Applications are invited from motivated individuals to undertake duties as the Cook Supervisor responsible for the provision of the school meal service at Kirkwall Grammar School. This is Orkney’s largest secondary school, providing meals for up to 900 pupils and staff daily. A significant part of the role will see you managing a dedicated kitchen team to prepare, cook and serve freshly prepared, home cooked meals which are compliant with Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2020, as well as adhering to our Food for Life served here bronze award that has been held since 2019.

Duties include preparation, cooking and service of food, supervision of staff - to include annual reviews and good discussions - menu planning, ordering of provisions, ensuring all aspects of service provision complies with food safety, completion of associated records, cash handling and liaising with school staff, parents, and pupils. Ensuring adherence to Health and Safety in the workplace as well as being a strong leader that sets a good example to the team at all times are essential in this role.

Applicants should either hold a Professional Cookery qualification at SCQF 5/6 (i.e., SVQ2, National 5, Standard Grade, O Grade, Intermediate 2, SVQ3, Higher, National Certificate, Foundation Apprenticeship), or have a minimum of 2 years previous relevant experience as detailed in the 'Experience' section of the Person Specification.

You must hold an Intermediate Food Hygiene Qualification, and a good understanding of C.O.S.H.H and H.A.C.C.P as well as a Health and Safety qualification would be advantageous.

This is a key role in Orkney School Meals and interviews for the post will include a practical catering assessment and presentation on healthy eating, in addition to questions from the catering management panel.

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate excellent catering skills, strong leadership qualities and a clear understanding of the Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland) Regulations 2020.

This post is subject to membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.
