An exciting and rare opportunity has arisen for a skilled, enthusiastic, and motivated individual to join our dynamic East Ayrshire team as a Dementia Advisor.

Dementia Advisors are often the first person families have contact with at Alzheimer Scotland and this role is central to our success, in ensuring people living with dementia and their families have local access to advice and support at a time when they need it.

The post holder will provide information on support services available locally for both the person with dementia their carers and family members, providing advice and signposting as and when required.

The Dementia Advisor will provide support to local communities across East and South Ayrshire to help them become more dementia-friendly and to increase their capacity to support those living with dementia. Support may involve practical advice, emotional support as well as access to resources, activities, groups, and other community programmes that will sustain, as far as is possible, peoples’ independence. As a key member of our local team, you will be based in our flagship dementia resource centre in Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire. Leading the small team of colleagues and volunteers in East Ayrshire to provide a wide range of information, advice, plus deliver therapeutic and social support as well as collaborating with the wider Ayrshire team and other Alzheimer Scotland colleagues.

Our Dementia Advisors can support families at any stage in their dementia journey. They also provide support to local communities within their respective area to help them become more dementia-friendly and to increase their capacity to support those living with dementia. Additionally, developing and supporting our volunteer network is an expected part of the role.

Working with individuals and families affected by dementia, our Dementia Advisors are required to have a warm, flexible approach, a good understanding of dementia, as well as skills in empathy and relationship building. Often supporting people on a one-one basis, Dementia Advisors are in a unique position to offer a very person-centred level of support.

Applicants will have excellent communication and networking skills; hold a recognised professional qualification and/or have relevant experience with a willingness to learn and participate in training. Relevant qualifications and/or experience of working with people with dementia would be an advantage.
