The purpose of the role is:- to provide a professional legal advice and representation service to the Council, and other organisations as authorised by the Council, as directed by the Team Leader to provide a customer and solution focused service based on the principles of continuous improvement, professionalism, integrity and best value and to represent the Council’s interests in legal matters to a high professional standard. |
The Council’s in-house legal Service has an exciting opportunity for a Solicitor to join its Litigation team. The applicant should have experience of a variety of areas of law that impact upon the council’s business and handling cases in court/tribunals. Experience of working for a public sector organisation would be desirable as would the practical application of employment law, however, experience in all relevant forms of dispute resolution shall be considered. The workload will be varied, challenging and interesting – you will make a positive difference to the lives of people within Aberdeen. You will be supported in a collegiate environment and encouraged to develop a full range of legal and other skills. The Litigation team provides advice to the officers of the Council in respect of housing, ASBO, AWI work, property disputes, permanence, homelessness, education, employment, commercial disputes and any matter that may involve the business of the council. Litigation and advocacy skills will be essential to this role.
The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:
- Admitted as a solicitor in Scotland and holding a Practising Certificate from the Law Society of Scotland.
- Detailed working knowledge and experience of relevant current legislation and practice in areas of law in the Litigation Team
- Relevant law degree (LLB) or professional qualification.
The postholder is able to demonstrate:
- An understanding of the provision of legal advice and representation within a public sector environment
- Experience of negotiating a resolution to a variety of legal issues of varying complexity
- An understanding of the requirement to manage risk in the provision of legal advice and representation to a large public sector organisation
