Job Description

A number of Planner posts are available across the 3 Area Development Management Teams in Aberdeenshire.

Situated in the Northeast of Scotland, Aberdeenshire is a beautiful and historic region, encapsulating the rugged mountains of the Cairngorms and breath-taking coastal scenery. The  wider Aberdeen City and Shire Region boasts a number of excellent facilities including world renowned golf courses, a top league football team, the stunning river Dee and river Don, excellent transport links (including proximity to Aberdeen International Airport and Aberdeen Harbour and ferry terminal), a range of local and regional shops as well as the breath-taking scenery of the hills. In fact the area has something for everyone.

One of the most dynamic and unique regions of the country, Aberdeenshire is a great place to live, work and visit. We believe we have something to offer people of all ages- a quality of life which is hard to find elsewhere.

These posts provide an excellent opportunity for Trainee, Graduate, and experienced Chartered Planners to join the Development Management Section within the Planning & Economy Service to assist and contribute to the delivery of a high-quality planning service within Aberdeenshire.

We are looking for motivated, enthusiastic, and highly organised individuals with excellent written and verbal communication skills. You will be educated to degree level or working towards an appropriate degree in Town and Country Planning, or equivalent that allows further study in a post graduate RTPI recognised planning course and eligibility for membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI).

The role of Planner (Development Management) represents an opportunity to work as part of a team providing a Development Management service within Aberdeenshire. The role offers opportunities for being responsible for the assessing and determining of a varied caseload of planning applications and pre-applications enquiries, liaising with colleagues in other Services of the Council and external organisations in connection with development management matters and providing advice on planning matters to the public, developers, and Elected Members of the Council.

There are several posts available within the 3 Area Development Management teams with locations across our five service centres in the busy and historic towns of Stonehaven, Banff, Ellon, Peterhead and Inverurie. A flexible "blended" approach to working is currently used with some home working practices developed during the Covid pandemic and extensive use of technology sitting alongside office based working, a requirement to undertake site visits, and attend offices for team collaborative working and meetings and training events as necessary. This flexible “blended” approach to working is likely to continue as the Service remains committed to working within an enhanced digital environment.

There are full time and part time hours available.

Please see attached document which is a testimonial from a current Planner who has been employed with Aberdeenshire Council since 2021.
