Our libraries are at the heart of communities, providing a wide range of experiences and opportunities for all who wish to use them. Our staff engage with our communities to help create a thriving place to live, full of lifelong learning chances. Working as part of a team, the successful candidates will show that they can deliver high quality customer service and an understanding of the needs of different parts of the community.

Young people play a key role in many of our libraries - we support their needs and have initiatives that strike a balance between informal engagement and learning opportunities. It will help you in this role to understand young people’s hopes and challenges.

Libraries support digital inclusion, reduce poverty and inequalities, support social isolation and they play a key role in supporting attainment through initiatives such as the First Minister’s Reading Challenge, READ,WRITE,COUNT, and Bookbug. We support babies and new parents and children and young people. Teenagers can engage in positive activities and we help all ages develop their digital skills. We provide advice and signposting to older and more vulnerable residents visiting the library to catch up over a cup of tea.

If you could be an effective team player in a service that puts customers first, please apply. We expect successful candidates to work in any library across the city.

The City of Edinburgh Council is committed to recruiting people who will deliver high quality public services to our diverse communities within the city of Edinburgh. As an equal opportunity employer, we recognise and value the benefits that a diverse workforce with different values, beliefs, experience, and backgrounds brings. We are committed to building an inclusive recruitment culture where all people feel valued, included and able to be at their best.

We would like to encourage conversations with people who have not previously thought about employment within a Local Authority. We warmly invite people to take this opportunity to demonstrate their ability regardless of age, disability, sex, gender, race, marital status, sexual orientation, religious or political beliefs.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. The preferred candidate will be required to join the PVG Scheme or undergo a PVG Scheme update check. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

As part of our goal to improve our organisational culture and create a great place to work together for the people of Edinburgh, we want to make sure that we’re bringing the best people into our roles, not just in their skills and experience but also in their approach to work.

To help achieve this, we’re changing the way we interview and assess candidates by moving from a competency-based interview approach to a behavioural and technical (skills for the job) based approach. This new way of interviewing will allow us to assess how you think and how you would bring Our Behaviours of Respect, Integrity and Flexibility into your ways of working.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
