Salary: £26,769 - £30,732 per year

Edinburgh library and information services creates positive benefits and outcomes for local communities. Libraries are no longer simply a transactional service where people come to borrow and return books – we deliver on a number of key government agendas to support digital inclusion, reduce poverty and inequalities, tackle social isolation and play a key role in supporting attainment through initiatives such as the READ,WRITE,COUNT, Every Child a Library Member and Bookbug.
Edinburgh Central Library is the busiest and largest library in a service which includes 27 Community Libraries, , mobiles, hospital and Prison libraries, and 23 Secondary school libraries. Central Library is made up of 6 separate collections – the Lending and Children’s libraries, the Reference and Edinburgh and Scottish collections, and the Art and Design and Music collections.
There are two Library Supervisors in the Lending and Children’s team who work together to ensure consistent, high standards of excellent customer services by supervising and training staff to organise and present services to maximum attraction and advantage for all customers. Strong organisational skills are needed to enable the planning of workloads, timetables and rotas of a group of staff, many of whom work part time. The Library Supervisors support the Library Development Leader in identifying customer needs, and positively promoting service improvements and developments. They also act as a duty manager for the whole Central Library building on occasion
The Lending and Children’s team at Central Library manages the highest volume of stock transactions in Edinburgh Libraries. You will spend time delivering and supervising a front-line service which is used by customers from all over Edinburgh. A strong interest in literature (children’s or adult) will help the successful candidate to deal with the many enquiries made at the library. We are also looking for someone who can creatively develop and deliver programmes of activities which promote literacy and a joy of reading and learning to a wide range of customers, including for children and young people, and people from groups with protected characteristics.

This post is regulated work with children and/or protected adults under the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007. Where an individual has spent a continuous period of 3 months or more out with the UK in the last 5 years, an Overseas Criminal Record Check will be required. You will be required to provide this check. An unconditional offer of employment and commencement in the post will be subject to the outcome of both these pre-employment checks being deemed satisfactory.

Our salary range typically reflects the initial starting salary and annually increases until it reaches the top of the range.
