East Lothian Council seek to appoint a positive, resilient, and inclusive individual for the position of Class Teacher, at The Brae. The Brae is the severe and complex needs provision attached to Rosehill High School, on the Wallyford Learning Campus. The Brae currently has two classes with a combined total of 14 learners, but this will expand to four classes from August 2024.

This secondary learning facility is designed to support creative approaches to learning, with a range of adaptive teaching spaces. Alongside up to date and digitally enabled classrooms, there is a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics) wing, a Learning Resource Centre, extensive facilities to support the arts, and a state-of-the-art sport and leisure complex. Learning and teaching on the campus goes beyond the traditional classroom and encompasses outdoor learning and sustainability. The campus also includes a number of community and health spaces to support collaboration between a range of professionals and sectors. The Brae has been purpose built and includes exciting spaces such as a sensory room and hydrotherapy pool.

Each class teacher will play a crucial role in supporting the wellbeing and learning of young people with complex needs.

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they can:

  • Communicate clearly and kindly with young people to help reduce any barriers to presence, participation and achievement in school.
  • Work as part of the team around the child, building and maintaining strong relationships in the wider school community.
  • Exhibit the interpersonal skills required to play a full part in safeguarding and nurturing young people, offering the right balance of challenge and support.
  • Demonstrate leadership of learning, with a commitment to enacting young people’s right to a full curriculum and associated opportunities.
  • Commit to ongoing professional learning to best support those in their care
  • Take an active role in working in partnership with parents and carers, as well as professionals from other agencies.

The successful candidates will be at the forefront of a growing school community and have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference to young people’s lives. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of a brand-new place of learning, in which everyone can thrive.
