Job Description

Glasgow Life is looking for an Events Officer– Social Impact - World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024 (WAIC24) to join us on a full-time basis on a fixed term contract through to March 2024. As Events Officer – Social Impact, you will join the dedicated team planning for the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity to join the team in a key role supporting multiple areas of event delivery in relation to social impact.

Following on from the success of staging the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2019, Glasgow is delighted to host the World Athletics Indoor Championships for the first time in Scotland and the third time in the United Kingdom in 2024. From 1-3 March, we look forward to welcoming athletes, officials, and spectators from across the globe to Glasgow’s Emirates Arena. The event will bring new ideas, partnerships and initiatives to the city, and the team is currently expanding to ensure the success of the event itself, alongside social impact and community engagement projects that will leave a lasting legacy for Glasgow and beyond.

Glasgow Life is the strategic lead for events in the city, and the team is responsible for investing to attract, create, deliver, leverage and grow major annual and one-off sports and cultural events in the city. The events team delivers high-profile events throughout the year, including Merchant City Festival, Glasgow Mela, the World Pipe Band Championships and Glasgow’s winter events. The team is preparing to deliver the UCI Cycling World Championships in 2023, European Capital of Sport 2023 and is building a team to deliver the World Athletics Indoor Championships 2024. Our team works on behalf of the Glasgow Events Board and acts as an initial point of contact for events coming to the city, working with local, national and international partners to maximise the benefits of events to the city and evolve, position and promote Glasgow as a world leading event destination. Events boost the city’s tourism economy and provide memorable moments for residents and visitors.

The role 
Working as part of the social impact functional area, this role will be key in supporting the Project Manager – Social Impact to coordinate community engagement and social impact projects aligned to the World Athletics Indoor Championships. Essential for this role are knowledge, understanding and experience of social impact projects of all kinds, particularly within a sporting context. Communication and the ability to engage with others will also be key to this role. This role will report to the Project Manager – Social Impact.

 

The candidate 
If you are interested in joining us as Events Officer – Social Impact you’ll need: 
•    A passion for positive social impact
•    An understanding of both sustainability and accessibility within the events sector and a desire to make events sustainable and accessible
•    Experience of working on social impact projects, including equality, diversity and inclusion (ED&I), health and wellbeing or environmental sustainability
•    An appropriate level of qualification/training or employment experience in cultural and/or sporting events sector and/or venue
•    The ability to manage and deliver high quality work across multiple work areas 
•    A proven ability to communicate and work in partnership with multiple internal and external partners and stakeholders at a variety of levels
•    Excellent verbal and written communication skills
•    Ability to utilise software packages such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel

Some of our roles are currently piloting hybrid working, with teams working between the office and home. Your line manager will agree these days with you. This balance will enable you and the team to continue much-needed collaborative working. 

Our office is at Commonwealth House, 32 Albion Street, Glasgow.

This role will follow a standard working pattern Monday-Friday (09:00-17:00), although there will be flexibility within this for out of regular hours work during the delivery of this major international event. Your line manager will discuss and agree with you any out of hours work required.
