Planning Manager (Development Management)

NLC14 £49,085 - £53,769

At North Lanarkshire Council we’re full of energy and ideas to transform our towns and communities into vibrant places to live, work and visit. As Scotland’s fourth largest local authority, we’ve got lofty ambitions, bags of determination and we’re moving at a pace to generate real change in our communities and how we deliver services.

If you are looking for a career with an employer who offers a generous package of terms and conditions and promotes work-life balance and wellbeing amongst its employees, North Lanarkshire Council could be the place for you. We are perfectly situated in the heart of Scotland’s central belt with great transport links and offer generous annual leave entitlement and access to a variety of flexible working options and initiatives.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to lead one of our two Development Management Teams. You will work with a variety of partners, customers, and clients, delivering a professional planning service that maximises resources and delivers positive outcomes.

In this role you will have a responsibility for developing and delivering the Council’s planning strategies and policies, leading service development projects, managing a team of professionals dealing with often complex planning applications and appeals, presenting evidence at Public Inquiries and assisting with enforcement issues in North Lanarkshire. You will also work closely with our key project partners to contribute planning advice, supporting the development of programmes of work in line with The Plan for North Lanarkshire.

With a Degree or Diploma in a relevant discipline, you should be a member of the Royal Town Planning Institute or equivalent professional membership with substantial knowledge and experience in Planning and knowledge of forthcoming planning developments/initiatives. Ideally you will have experience of collaborative partnership working with key project partners including Glasgow City Region.

You will be business and customer focused with a demonstrable record of identifying opportunities, achieving outcomes, managing change, and exercising strong leadership skills. You will be self-motivated with a flexible and collaborative approach to work and have the ability to cope with multiple and changing demands whilst meeting tight deadlines. You will also have a sound understanding and knowledge of Planning policy, legislation, and initiatives at local, regional and national levels.

With excellent organisational and IT skills, you will be able to utilise various Microsoft Office packages, and be a clear written and verbal communicator, with the ability to analyse information and produce reports and with experience of presenting information in public forums.

You will be joining a dynamic and flexible team within Planning and Place, who currently operate a hybrid model of home-working and office-based work at the Civic Centre complex in Motherwell. You will be required to travel throughout North Lanarkshire with occasional travel throughout the Glasgow City Region to undertake the duties of this post.
