A permanent full-time opportunity has arisen in the Building Standards team for an enthusiastic person to assist with the Council’s delivery of its statutory building standards functions.

The Building Standards Inspector role focuses on inspecting construction works on site to certify that works are following approved plans and the Technical Handbooks following the grant of a building warrant. The post will be especially suitable if you enjoy working outdoors and directly with the construction industry. You will have a working knowledge of the Building Regulations and experience of working with all trades within the construction industry. The role requires some basic computer knowledge as updating and maintaining necessary records is an essential part of the role. An awareness of the building standards system and the role of local authority verifiers would be an advantage although training will be provided.

You will contribute to the successful delivery of Council and Service targets, objectives and national Performance Framework criteria, whilst monitoring personal workload and maintaining appropriate records to achieve appropriate performance indicators and timescales.

The minimum knowledge required for this role can be evidenced by either:
holding a qualification at SCQF 6/7 i.e. SVQ Level 3, HNC or SVQ level 3 in a relevant discipline or Construction Industry equivalent OR having a minimum of 4 years’ previous relevant experience.

You will be eligible to join the Local Government Pension Scheme which is a career average revalued earnings (CARE) defined benefit scheme, for which the employer contribution paid is currently 17.0%.

This post is subject to basic Disclosure Scotland clearance.

You will need to be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service. A full, current UK driving licence is essential. Please note that Orkney Islands Council is committed to making reasonable adjustments so if you are unable to drive due to a disability your application will still be considered.

Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Steven Poke, Service Manager, Building Standards, e-mail steven.poke@orkney.gov.uk or telephone 01856 873535.

Closing date: Sunday 16 April 2023

Please note interview expenses are not payable for this post.
