Due to the forthcoming retirement of the current post holder, in August 2023, we are seeking to recruit a new Depute Head Teacher for Stromness Academy. We are looking to appoint an energetic and committed school leader with good strategic leadership and management skills, who will, with the support of a dedicated Senior Leadership and staff team, continue to lead and develop the school. The Senior Leadership Team consists of the Head Teacher, two Depute Head Teachers and a Business Manager. The remit of this post currently includes strategic responsibility for Wellbeing, Equality and Inclusion aspects of the school, in addition to being Head of Year for S1-3 and line management of several curriculum areas. Remits within the Senior Leadership Team may be redistributed depending on the skills offered by the successful candidate.

Stromness Academy is a six-year secondary school on a well-appointed campus in Orkney, voted the best place in the UK to bring up children. Pupils also benefit from the school’s strong partnership with Orkney College, which provides a wide range of additional curriculum choices for senior phase students. Our catchment area covers the town of Stromness and the West Mainland, plus the islands of Hoy and Graemsay, a dispersed population with over two thirds of our pupils travelling in by bus or ferry. Although small in size (approximately 350 on roll) we deliver a broad curriculum, and our small class sizes mean we know our pupils well and are able to be flexible to meet their needs. We are a forward-looking school, committed to providing a positive and purposeful environment where all our pupils achieve.

Orkney lies approximately nine miles north of the Scottish mainland and is home to the smallest local authority in Scotland. There is a strong cultural life and visitors world-wide are attracted to the scenery, history and archaeology. Orkney is home to a community of about 22,000 residents and among its many attributes, offers a safe environment, excellent educational, recreational and health facilities, a community spirit, and an exceptional quality of life. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to become part of a rich and vibrant community.

Further information about the school and our activities can be found on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/stromnessacademy/ or on www.stromnessacademy.org.uk

Applicants must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

Salary is currently based on Point 1 of the HT/DHT spine of the SNCT Salary Tables, plus a Distant Islands Allowance. We offer a generous relocation package.

This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.
