We are looking for an experienced and committed practitioner, with excellent strategic management skills to take up the post of Head Teacher for this successful and highly regarded small island school. Papa Westray Community School has a current roll of 5 children from P1-7 and 4 children in nursery.

This post is a ‘teaching-head’ position. Management and planning time is provided by a committed teaching team who travel to Papa Westray by boat and plane on a Monday and Wednesday. The Headteacher is also the registered Nursery Manager for the setting, working closely with the nursery staff team to ensure quality provision and social opportunities for all children.

This post will allow an enthusiastic primary school teacher to work with a close-knit staff team who are passionate about achieving positive outcomes for every child. The nature and size of the school allow an exciting balance of adventurous learning whilst ensuring progression and learning routines.

The School is located in the centre of Papa Westray and enjoys strong support from the wider community. On an annual basis, the school works with a wide variety of local and national partners to ensure that children have opportunities for wider achievement. Local context plays a key role in learning and spaces beyond the school grounds are often used to extend learning.

The successful candidate will benefit from the support of local headteacher colleagues and may be required to undertake additional development work on behalf of the service.

Applicants must be registered, or in the process of registering, with the General Teaching Council for Scotland. The successful applicant should hold or complete the Standard for Headship within 30 months of being in post. The Head Teacher is also the Early Learning and Childcare (Nursery) manager and as such needs to fulfil the requirements of the Care Inspectorate for registration.

Salary is currently based on point 1 of the HT/DHT spine of the SNCT Salary Tables, plus an Islands Allowance. We offer a generous relocation package.

You should be able to travel efficiently and effectively between various work locations within Orkney to meet the operational requirements of the Service.

This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss the post with the Service Manager for Primary Education Morag Miller (01856 873535). Email morag.miller@orkney.gov.uk

Closing Date: Sunday 5 March 2023

Please note that interview and relocation expenses will be paid for this post in accordance with Council Policy.
