We are looking to appoint a Head Teacher for Westray Junior High School.

Westray Junior High School caters for pupils from 3 to 16 years and has a current school roll of 78. The school has a committed staff team of 17 and, in addition, is serviced by visiting itinerant teachers. School buildings are in good order and are very well resourced. The school also serves as a Community Centre, with very good facilities well used by both pupils and island residents. The school enjoys support from its active Parent Council and community.

An ethos of hard work and a caring attitude has enabled pupils to engage in a very positive learning environment, setting high expectations of achievement and encouragement for each individual to achieve his or her potential. Links with other schools and the Orkney College are constantly being developed and children’s experiences are enhanced in a variety of other ways with an aim to provide equity of provision for all young people in Westray.

The role of Head Teacher has a wide remit covering the leadership and management of the Early Years setting, Primary and Secondary stages. Almost all pupils stay on to complete their Secondary 4 year, where they take a full range of National courses. Students who continue in their Senior Phase will normally complete their studies at Kirkwall Grammar School while staying in the Papdale Halls of Residence.

We are seeking to appoint an energetic and committed person from either the primary or secondary sector with good strategic and management skills who will, with the support of an enthusiastic and dedicated team of teachers, maintain the inspiring ethos and provide vision and direction to sustain a bright future for this island school. In particular:
• To encourage excellence and enjoyment
• To inspire life-long learning in both pupils and staff
• To work collaboratively with other island and mainland schools and partners to support the care, welfare and learning of the children and young people at the school

You should be able to demonstrate best classroom practice, evidence how you influence and inspire others and produce high quality work. In addition, you must be able to work together with the staff and the local authority to focus on quality improvement planning and support for professional development which meets the needs of the school and its pupils. As Head Teacher you will be part of the education service management team and will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of education in Orkney as a whole.
