We are looking for a teacher with experience in supporting young people to join our team in Pupil Support within Kirkwall Grammar School (KGS).

Your main duties will be to work collaboratively with school staff and a wide range of multi-agency partners and community partners to coordinate and promote opportunities and appropriate support for young people in KGS with a wide range of social, emotional and behavioural difficulties which may give rise to significant Additional Support Needs. This will include targeted approaches and the development and preparation of individualised timetables. You will help pupils develop skills for life, and you will support the achievement of literacy and numeracy qualifications for pupils at risk of leaving school with no qualifications.

You will be expected to develop relationships with and strategies for young people who may be on the cusp of disengagement with school or classes or at risk of exclusion, offering a flexible range of approaches according to their additional individual support needs. This will include the use of emotional regulation and self-regulation strategies in, for example, anger management and stress, and using solution-oriented approaches to develop restorative plans and activities within the Child’s Plan process. You will work within the local community with pupils to support personal development. This may be carried out in 1:1 work or within small group work.

You will work closely with Guidance and Pupil Support staff within the school to regularly evaluate the impact of your work on our young people, and you will be expected to carry out ongoing Professional Learning into current research on supporting young people to feel included and engaged in and beyond school.

You must be registered, or in the process of registering, with the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

This post is subject to membership of the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme in respect of regulated work with children.

Salary will be based on the Main Grade scale of the SNCT Salary Tables plus a Distant Islands Allowance. We offer a generous relocation package.

Prospective applicants are invited to discuss the post by contacting Ruth McKay, Depute Head Teacher (Pupil Support), email: ruth.mckay@glow.orkneyschools.org.uk, or Marie Phillips (Principal Teacher Curriculum Support), email: marie.phillips@glow.orkneyschools.org.uk, or telephone 01856 872102.

Closing Date: Sunday 14 April 2024

Please note that interview and relocation expenses will be paid for this post, in accordance with Council policy.
