EDUCATION, LEISURE AND HOUSING
Stromness Academy

Teacher of Physical Education

35 hours per week (1.0 FTE)
Temporary up to 18 August 2024

Stromness Academy has a very strong Physical Education Department, who work with a wide range of partners to deliver high quality physical education. Academic results are excellent at National 4/5, Higher and Advanced Higher, and uptake into SQA courses is good, but this is only a small part of what this department provides for young people. Gaining Sport Scotland’s Gold School Sports Award validated the department’s commitment to sport for all alongside support for elite performers. Development of pupils’ leadership skills is a particular strength: the department has historically been pro-active in creating opportunities for young people to take an active role in the delivery of sports provision, and is beginning to build this up again as Covid restrictions ease. The department is a hive of activity at lunchtimes, with many of the activities on offer traditionally being led by young people. This learning is recognised and accredited through a range of formal qualifications including the Sports Leaders UK Level 5 qualification in Sports Leadership. The department is also active at whole-school level, taking a lead in the provision of an outdoor education experience for all our pupils as part of an inter-disciplinary learning programme, during which they work towards Youth Achievement awards.

We are looking for a committed and dynamic individual to further support this work. You will be a skilled and enthusiastic educator, fully committed to the learning and teaching approaches of Curriculum for Excellence and to inspiring and motivating pupils. Commitment to collegiate working, self-evaluation and maximising opportunities for all pupils is essential. You must be registered, or in the process of registering, with the General Teaching Council for Scotland, and experience of teaching within Curriculum for Excellence is desirable.

Stromness Academy is a six year secondary school on a well-appointed campus in Orkney, which is frequently voted the best place in the UK to bring up children. Our catchment area covers the town of Stromness and the West Mainland, a dispersed population with over two thirds of our pupils being bussed into school. The small size of our school (approximately 350 on roll), and our classes, means we know our pupils well and are able to be flexible to meet their needs. We are committed to providing a positive and purposeful environment where all our pupils achieve, as set out in our school vision. This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to work in a forward-looking school and a rich and vibrant community.

Further information about the school and our activities can be found on our website www.stromnessacademy.org.uk  and our Facebook page
