Job Description

Professional Trainee (Part 1 Architectural Assistant) PKC11245
£25,508 - £27,874 Fixed Term (until 30 June 2025)
Pullar House, 35 Kinnoull Street, Perth PH1 5GD
Perth & Kinross Council – Property Services operates within a Local Authority environment and provides an in-house Architectural Delivery service to all Council Service Departments. It actively engages in workplace learning and recognises the importance of supporting Undergraduate students to fulfil the ARB professional experience requirement. We are now offering a 1-year fixed term placement to a validated Part 1 degree holder, to join the design/delivery Team as an Architectural Assistant to work alongside other architectural and construction professionals in our multi-disciplinary office based in the City of Perth.
You will have the confidence, skills and qualification to assist the Architect/Contract Administrator in the development, delivery and management of a range of Projects, of varying scope and complexity, throughout RIBA Stages 1-7. A key aspect of the role is the production of technical drawings and specifications to attain low carbon design and, based on Project criteria/assessment, Passivhaus accredited certification.
Through our Framework of Learning and supported by a dedicated Mentor you will have the opportunity to see and experience the varied Stages of a Project. This will involve survey work, design work and feasibility studies, preparing design/technical drawings and specifications, including contract administration, reporting, site visits and attending client, design team and technical meetings in a collaborative environment. You will acquire insight into how design and technical drawings translate into physical structures, appreciate the significance of effective communication, discussions, and decision-making in response to changes, and recognise the importance of effective software skills for maintaining organised production information.
PKC – Property is addressing the Climate Change challenge: we have delivered the first Passivhaus accredited and certified Primary School in Scotland and continue to lead with the first Secondary School swimming/leisure facility, currently on-site in construction, and at the design stage for the first small new-build gym/dining facility. More information on Climate Change is available from our Climate Action website: www.pkc.gov.uk/article/21474/Climate-change
To take advantage of this exceptional opportunity, working in one of Scotland’s leading Local Authorities, you must hold a validated Part 1 degree and possess the right attitudes and attributes to make a valued contribution to the Team and our work.
The Project Delivery Team have an office base in the centre of Perth, which we share with our Property Services colleagues. This is a vibrant, friendly, well occupied space which has recently been upgraded to offer a variety of work settings for differing individual and team tasks; it will offer a valuable insight into the wide range of work undertaken by a Local Authority and within PKC - Property. Staff can work in a hybrid manner from a variety of locations with most selecting to work from our office at least 2 days a week, but we strongly recommend and encourage you to make the office your predominant work base to fully exploit the learning opportunities on offer through this placement.

Requirements

Ideally, you will have a working knowledge of AutoCAD/Revit, and an understanding of low carbon design and Passivhaus design/delivery principles, including BIM systems. It is expected you will be a competent designer with the skills to express yourself with confidence, clarity and precision using effective graphic, written and oral presentation.
