This post offers an exciting opportunity to provide conveyancing and property support to significant regeneration and development projects that have been identified as key priorities for the Council.

Your main duties will be site assembly work, including acquisitions and compulsory purchase orders and advising on development agreements, but you will also require to assist in the provision of a comprehensive conveyancing and property service to the Council.

You must hold, or be eligible to hold, a current Practising Certificate fromthe Law Society of Scotland and have experience in conveyancing and property law. You will require to be able to undertake a range of diverse tasks and achieve successful outcomes and to prioritise a varied workload while working with minimum supervision.  An awareness of Council policies and initiative and the ability to develop links with elected members and clients are essential too.  A working knowledge of the procurement regulations would be of assistance.

Recognising the importance of our people’s development, this role comes with an opportunity for career progression.  While the Service is seeking a solicitor role at Grade 9, there will be an opportunity for the successful candidate potentially to develop to a Grade 10 level at a later date.

Requirements for Grade 9 include:

  • you must have some conveyancing and, property and contract drafting experience, but there is no requirement to have specific experience of compulsory purchase orders, common good or shared equity arrangements, although a demonstrable interest in this area is desirable;
  • you must be keen to learn and undertake personal development to work towards a Grade 10 level; and
  • you must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal, report writing and communication skills and the ability to develop effective links with elected members and clients.

Requirements for Grade 10 include:

  • you must have experience of conveyancing and property and contract drafting, and shared equity arrangements, compulsory purchase orders, collateral warranties, etc., and must be able to carry out a range of related tasks such as drafting and negotiating contracts and missives, servitudes and related agreements and providing advice and support in relation to conveyancing, property and contract issues and general advice work across all of the Council’s functions;
  • you must have an ability to work under pressure and possess and be detail oriented.
  • you must be able to motivate others (including supervising paralegals, administrative and clerical staff where necessary) and demonstrate an ability to deliver innovation in service delivery and to provide relevant in-house training;
  • you must have an ability to deal with complex legal matters including an appreciation of the importance of corporate governance as an officer who will prepare and check authority reports of the Council, its Boards and senior officers; and
  • you must be able to demonstrate involvement in such related work either

in the public or private sector, and an ability to make a contribution to the successful delivery of the Housing and Regeneration team functions at Renfrewshire Council.
