Job Description

Carluke High School is a non‐denominational comprehensive school located in the South Lanarkshire town of Carluke. The town is situated 18 miles from Glasgow and 30 miles from Edinburgh and is served by good road links and a rail station that provides direct links to Glasgow, Edinburgh and surrounding areas.

The school catchment includes Carluke, Law and Forth communities. We are part of the Carluke Learning Community Cluster and work in partnership with Braidwood Primary School, Carluke Primary School and Nursery, Crawforddyke Primary School and Nursery, Forth Primary School and Nursery, High Mill Primary School, Kirkton Primary School, Kirkstyle ELC, Law Primary School and Nursery, St Athanasius Primary School and Nursery and Victoria Park School. We also attract pupils from North Lanarkshire and other parts of South Lanarkshire.

We also work closely with our colleagues in the Youth and Family Community Learning team and have the Universal Connections resource located within Carluke.  All staff in our learning community work collegiately to support our young peoples’ learner journeys, ensuring there is support and challenge for all learners and ambitious pupil pathways.

At present 1050 pupils are served by a teaching staff of 80 FTE. Our projected roll for August 2023 is 1146. The school senior management team currently comprises the Head Teacher and 4 Depute Head Teachers. There are 17 Principal Teachers of which 9 lead curricular faculties or departments and 8 lead areas of pupil support.  Principal Teachers also support a range of whole school leadership and improvement activities as part of our extended leadership team.  The school benefits from a highly skilled and effective team of Support Staff, whose work supports the wide range of curricular and extracurricular needs of our pupils. The Parent Council encourages a strong partnership between the school and parents and with the wider community in support of school improvement.

Around 47% of our catchment lies within SIMD 1-4. 33% of our pupils have a recognised additional support need and our FME entitlement is 17%. Our School Improvement Plan is focussed on continuing to raise attainment for all pupils, to further increase positive and sustained destinations and to provide appropriate strategies to continue to reduce the gap between attainment and deprivation.  The school last underwent inspection by Education Scotland in October 2019 (which was reported in November 2019) and has taken forward improvement following the visit under a new Senior Leadership Team.
