Glasgow Caledonian University - the University for the Common Good - is a vibrant, values-led, multi-cultural, civic University with a global outlook and strong commitment to delivering social innovation and sustainable development in its education and research

Our organisational strategy is aligned with the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals and our globally recognised researchers advise governments, industry and international bodies. We’re ranked fourth in the world and first in the UK for promoting gender equality, in the top 70 universities globally for social impact, and first in Scotland for health and wellbeing, and reduced inequalities, for which we are also ranked 21st in the world (THE Impact Rankings, 2022). In 2020-21, we contributed £1.7 billion and more than 14,000 jobs across the globe (BIGGAR Economics, 2022).

GCU is committed to widening participation, and delivering positive outcomes for our students. We are Scotland’s leading provider of Graduate Apprenticeships. With campuses in Glasgow, London and New York, we have transnational partnerships around the world, supporting more than 22,000 students from 130 countries. Guided by our values – integrity, responsibility, creativity and confidence - we transform the lives of the people and communities we serve.

The Department of Applied Science in the School of Computing, Engineering and Built Environment is comprised of the instrumentation and control subject areas alongside chemical sciences.  The Department offers the following postgraduate programmes: MSc Applied Instrumentation and Control, and MSc in Applied Data Science in Engineering.  In addition, we have an undergraduate programme in Forensic Investigation.  The Department hosts modules in control and instrumentation at all undergraduate and postgraduate levels to mechanical and electrical engineering  programmes (including Graduate Apprenticeship) across the School.

We are looking to appoint a Lecturer in Control Engineering with a track record in teaching and research who is committed to enhancing the student experience and understanding in this challenging subject area.  The successful candidate will be part of an enthusiastic team contributing to all levels of teaching, research and student support within the subject area.  Our laboratories are well equipped to ensure that teaching and research in control and instrumentation is well supported.

You will have a PhD in a relevant control engineering area, and experience of teaching, including use of mathematical modelling tools for control applications, academic delivery and a strong commitment to the enhancement of teaching, student experience and progression.  You should have an in-depth knowledge of modern control systems analysis and design as well as the practical implementation of control and instrumentation systems.  A current and appropriate record of research and / or knowledge exchange that compliments the existing themes of the University, which are aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is essential and preferably complements one of the research areas of existing academic staff in the Department / School.

The Department is expanding its portfolio to include the digital transformation of engineering assets and is particularly interested in hearing from engineers who have experience and skills in this area and SCADA.  An eagerness to engage in extra-curriculum activities and outreach programmes would be desirable.

Further details on this post are available by contacting Professor Sheila Smith, Head of Department at a.s.smith@gcu.ac.uk or on 0141 331 3552.
