Head of Music

Background –

Lathallan School has just over 200 pupils from the age of 4 through to 18 years with Music also being delivered in the Nursery. The Music Department consists of three specialists: The Head of Music, Head of Junior School and Head of Pastoral Care.

Expectations -

The list below is not exhaustive but gives a good indication of the key responsibilities of the job.

Teaching Responsibilities -

  • Delivery of Music from Junior School to S6 in coordination with other Departmental colleagues.
  • Development and delivery of courses in line with the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence, National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher in Music / Music Technology.
  • Participation in our co-curricular programme that will reflect the skills and interests of the incumbent.
  • Reporting on progress and achievements of pupils orally and in writing.
  • To assist with boarding duties once a week on a rota basis for part of the academic year.
  • To act as a Form Teacher as required.

Wider Responsibilities -

· The organisation of the Music budget and resourcing.

· To review and update the Department Handbook, schemes of work and health and safety requirements.

· To organise and lead the peripatetic music delivery.

· To lead choirs, groups and bands as appropriate.

· To provide or facilitate musical accompaniment at assemblies and school events such as Presentation Day, Burns Supper etc. A high standard of piano playing is an expectation.

· To lead / direct Senior Shows and support those of the Junior School.

· To lead trips and performances outwith school in line with school policy.

· To develop strategies with colleagues to aid transition points within the whole school.

· Organisation of assessment, coursework and other SQA materials as required by the SQA coordinator.

· To actively support the marketing and promotion of the school.

Personal Qualities & additional requirements –

The successful candidate should be able to demonstrate the qualities of anyone placed in a position of loco parentis – compassion, clarity and direction. The ability to lead and inspire colleagues and pupils at a time of time change is desirable. As with all posts, a flexible approach will be essential. GTCS & PVG registration are be a requirement of the post as would access to original certificates as proof of qualifications.
