Health, Safety and Environmental Advisor

The Northern Lighthouse Board is the General Lighthouse Authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man, responsible for the superintendence and management of all lighthouses, buoys and beacons within those waters. We have provided this vital safety service to mariners since 1786.

The Role

Based at the NLB’s Headquarters in central Edinburgh (with the option of hybrid working), with a requirement for some travel throughout Scotland and the Isle of Man, as HS&E Advisor you will facilitate and ensure the implementation of the NLB’s documented Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems ashore and afloat. Your duties will include:

· Assist in the establishment of health and safety requirements at sites and use experience and initiative to provide practical solutions

· Support staff and contractors maintaining compliance with standards

· Providing training/refreshers in some topic areas of health, safety and environment

· Visiting sites, sometimes by boat, ship or helicopter to undertake health, safety and environmental inspections.

· Supporting on the development and improvement of the ISO management systems 9001, 14001 and 45001

There will be a requirement to attend safety critical training courses such as personal survival techniques, work at height/casualty rescue etc all of which will be provided by NLB.

Skills and Experience

You will be able to demonstrate a good working knowledge of HS&E legislation and industry best practice and to be able to transform this in to practical day to day operational activities. You will hold as a minimum a NEBOSH Certificate (Tech IOSH) or equivalent and be prepared to work towards NEBOSH Diploma level. In addition you should possess a relevant environmental qualification. Experience post qualification within a HS&E role, preferably in the engineering or maritime industries. Excellent communication skills and the ability to influence decision makers at all levels is essential.

Salary and Benefits
