Public Health Scotland wants to see a Scotland where everybody thrives - a Scotland where life expectancy improves and the difference in life expectancy between our poorest and wealthiest areas gets smaller.

Our first Chief Executive is retiring, having provided exceptional leadership and steered the new body through an extraordinary first few years of successfully bringing together three legacy organisations, whilst leading the national public health response to a global pandemic. We are now seeking a new Chief Executive who will provide inspiring executive leadership to all staff, the Board and its Committees. You will play a crucial role in continuing to secure collaboration and partnerships with organisations across the system, working to improve health outcomes for people and communities and to drive forward our ambitious, strategic plans.

You will deliver a dynamic, effective and innovative strategic approach to the planning, management and provision of a range of national, regional and local services to partners, including NHSScotland, Integration Joint Boards (IJBs), Scottish Government, Local Authorities, Community Planning Partnerships (CPPs) and the wider public and voluntary sector.

You will contribute significantly to the development and implementation of a clear, strong vision for Scotland’s health and wellbeing. The values, attitudes, and behaviours you demonstrate will play a major part in influencing the organisation’s culture and ethos, underpinning the success of the Board.

We are aiming to attract exceptional applicants with the senior level experience required for this significant appointment. You do not need to be a professional expert in public health, but you do need significant experience in leading impactful work to improve outcomes.

We are looking for applicants with a wide range of skills and backgrounds who are sensitive to the diverse health and wellbeing needs of the people of Scotland and who understand the wider determinants of health, the effect these have on individuals and communities and the contribution made by the whole system in Scotland to tackling health inequalities.

It is essential that you have considerable experience of operating at Board level in a diverse, complex and evolving organisation which requires the operation and understanding of matrix management skills. In addition, you will require the highest level of communication skills and an open, supportive and visible management style.

You must demonstrate our values through behaviours and actions. These values are:

  • Respect
  • Collaboration
  • Innovation
  • Excellence
  • Integrity

Experience of working in a public sector or third sector organisation with links to the health and care system would be an advantage.

For an informal, confidential discussion on this exciting opportunity, please contact the Board Chair, Angiolina Foster, on angiolina.foster@phs.scot to arrange a suitable date and time.

Closing date for completed applications is midnight on 6th November 2022
