Job Summary

RGU and the Net Zero Technology Centre have partnered to create the National Subsea Centre (NSC), a multi-million-pound Centre of Excellence for Subsea Research and Technology development. The NSC will harness the University's academic expertise, research capability and facilities to establish a world-class research and development centre focused on tackling the underwater challenges faced by all marine industries tackling sustainable economic development.

We are seeking to employ a highly motivated Research Fellow in the field of fisheries spatial data modelling, climate modelling and data analytics for a period of 24 months. The successful candidate will be part of the National Subsea Centre (NSC), Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen.

In this post you will contribute towards the development of methodologies and analyses techniques for fisheries spatial data with a view towards (i) understanding drivers of spatial patterns under current climatic conditions and (ii) estimating how climate change is expected to impact the spatial distribution of fisheries.

In addition to support the delivery of various research projects, you are also expected to support the exploitation of new opportunities with the funding bodies and NSC partners.

You will be predominately based at the National Subsea Centre at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen. Travel will be required from time to time to visit industrial or academic collaborators to disseminate research.

Salary on first appointment is normally to the bottom of the scale, although in exceptional circumstances an appointment further up the scale may be considered.

Job Description

RESPONSIBLE TO: Dr Ciprian Zavoianu 

RESPONSIBLE FOR: No supervisory responsibility 

PURPOSE OF POST: Assisting the Net Zero Operations research programme 


  • Develop methodology and analyse fisheries spatial data to understand drivers of spatial patterns under current climatic conditions (weather, species distribution, etc)
  • Develop approaches and guidance for taking account of climate change impacts on the spatial distribution of fisheries under future climate conditions
  • Produce periodic internal and grant reports as required.
  • Publicise research activity through publications, conferences, workshops and seminars, as appropriate, to raise the research profile of the National Subsea Centre.
  • Liaise with academic and research staff within the NSC and RGU to promote an awareness of research and research methods and to stimulate research activity.
  • Supervise relevant staff and research students, as appropriate.
  • Assist in developing links with other institutions within appropriate research fields.
  • Undertake any other reasonable duties that may be requested by the NSC Director.

Person Specification


Qualifications & Professional Memberships:

PhD in Marine Fisheries or related discipline, or close to submission of the thesis.

Knowledge & Skills: 

Sound understanding and relevant experience of marine fisheries, their ecology and their management - particularly in Scotland/UK.

Excellent Communication and Time Management


Working knowledge/experience of GIS 


Qualifications & Professional Memberships: 

Speciality in analysis of fishery spatial data (such as Vessel Monitoring System).

Knowledge & Skills: 

Knowledge and understanding of the key climate change pressures affecting the marine environment and climate change scenarios.

Team working and collaboration. 


Understanding of, and experience in, the use of statistical and/or modelling software packages relevant to marine ecology and marine fisheries.
